New textbook on dermatology published for advanced practice clinicians

Most healthcare workers learn about diagnosing and treating skin disorders through on-the-job training, because there's no standardized curriculum and few continuing education programs. To help fill that gap, Dr. Margaret Bobonich from Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Mary Nolen, a dermatology nurse at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Massachusetts, wrote and published "Dermatology for Advanced Practice Clinician."

Gel/antibiotic combo rivals ISO in treating severe acne

A Canadian study suggests that Epiduo Gel, used in combination with the oral antibiotic doxycycline, compares favorably with oral isotretinoin in the treatment of severe nodular acne. The research team, led by Dr. Jerry Tan of the University of Western Ontario, acknowledges that ISO is the gold standard for treating severe nodular acne. They add, however, that because some patients are unwilling or unable to take ISO, alternatives are needed.

Human collagen composite compared against commercial fillers

Early recognition of fractional resurfacing complications can help patients avoid permanent scarring, says an expert. "What's absolutely critical is that some complications of fractional laser complications are preventable,” says Dr. Andrei Metelitsa, co-director of the Institute for Skin Advancement and clinical associate professor of dermatology, University of Calgary. In this regard, he says, having a basic knowledge of what can happen and having staff members call patients shortly after treatment, can avoid some long-term scars.

Discovery of novel molecular mechanism involved in formation of skin

The formation of human skin involves a cascade of biochemical signals, which are not well understood. However, they are very important since their failure may cause diseases, such as Atopic Dermatitis and skin cancers, which affect more than 25 percent of the human population. CNIO researchers now discovered a new mechanism that regulates the differentiation of keratinocytes, the cells that make up most of the epidermis of the skin. Additionally, they show that this mechanism might be involved in skin cancer.
