Spas need regulation, doctor says after death of Quebec woman

The death of a 35-year-old Quebec woman should serve as a warning to Canadians that just because a spa service is offered "doesn't mean its safe," says a professor of emergency medicine. Unlike medical treatments, which can only be done to patients once tested and proven effective, there is no similar rigour with spa services, making them a case of buyer beware, said Louis Francescutti, a University of Alberta professor of emergency medicine and public health. A hat may no longer be the only answer for baldness. Researchers at Yale University have found new clues to the causes of hair loss in the fatty skin cells of mice. Studying cells from the fatty layer, the researchers found that signals from these fat cells were needed to stimulate the stem cells at the base of hair follicles, which are dormant in baldness. These cells could help scientists identify how to treat hair loss in humans. More

Acne treatment claims 'unsupported'

A British study suggests that companies touting the effectiveness of their acne treatment products can't always back their claims with hard evidence. According to an ABC News report, the University of Nottingham study found that common acne-fighting products lack proper research in documenting their effectiveness. The study notes that most guidelines for acne care are based on expert opinions, but that even those opinions many have conflicts of interest. More
