Putting your best face forward for the holidays
Richmond Times-Dispatch    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The holidays are your favorite time of the year, but you can't tell it by looking at your face. Instead of looking as happy and as ready-to-party as you feel, you look tired and troubled. Glitter and sequins make you feel like a superstar, but visible frown lines, tear troughs, crow's feet, bunny lines—descriptive names for those crinkles and folds—make you look like you're bored, tired, mad or wishing you were somewhere else. Or—nobody has to know—you could get a little something done. You know—Botox, Juvderm, Dysport, Restylane—things to reanimate and rejuvenate your face by plumping up folds and smoothing creases. A few minutes in a doctor's office and the differences can be striking. More

The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Leading makers of antiwrinkle drugs, breast implants and other appearance-related products are trying to derail a proposed tax on elective cosmetic surgery in the Senate's health-overhaul bill. The proposed 5 percent levy—dubbed the "Botax" after the antiwrinkle treatment product Botox—would raise an estimated $5.8 billion over 10 years. New Jersey imposes a 6 percent tax on certain cosmetic procedures, but the Botax proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would be the first federal tax on such treatments. More

Skin cream secrets revealed
Fox News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If asked to describe how skin cream feels, you might use words like "smooth," "thick," or "greasy." But for Ohio State University mechanical engineering professor Bharat Bhushan, these words aren't good enough. Using a special instrument, he has gleaned new understanding of how these creams interact with skin on the nanoscale, bringing a more quantitative measure to the smooth sensation. More

'Mood-enhancing makeup' set to dominate cosmetics in 2010
National Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Austerity chic" will make way for mood-enhancing makeup in 2010 alongside "naturally sourced" cosmetics and those enhanced by biochemistry and nano-technology advances, a report said. The trend for cutting back on the use of cosmetics ruled the beauty industry in 2009. But innovation and consumer resilience have shaped a new landscape for products in the coming year, according to consumer marketing and consulting firm Mintel in its "Global Beauty Trends for 2010."
