The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs held a hearing on Jan. 14 entitled "Examining Conference and Travel Spending Across the Federal Government." SGMP was pleased to be in attendance at the hearing and is proud to be a co-signer on an industry coalition letter crafted by the US Travel Association. Travel industry recovers nearly all jobs lost during recession

As of December 2013, the travel industry has recovered 99 percent of the jobs it lost during the Great Recession, putting it just 5,000 jobs shy of its pre-recession employment level, according to the U.S. Travel Association, which released an analysis of the U.S. Department of Labor's December jobs report. By contrast, the rest of the economy has recovered just 86 percent lost jobs.

Marriott invests in technology; launches new program for meeting planners

Marriott Hotels launched Meetings Imagined, a new program that aims to help meeting planners and hotel staff collaborate on event creation. Using an online platform, MeetingsImagined.com shares tips, trends and images described as "inspirational" to spark creativity. Through the website, customers can collaborate with hotels to design custom events or view programs featured at the participating test hotels, as well as share images on social media sites, such as Pinterest and Facebook.

Avoid a 'Michael Bay' moment at your meeting

Michael Bay was put on stage by Samsung to talk about the company's new curved 4K TV and how the new, higher-definition technology would bolster the movie-watching experience. But as he started speaking, only a few sentences in, the teleprompter malfunctioned, leaving him unable to read the script. Frustrated and frazzled, he gave up and walked off the stage, even after Joe Stinziano, Samsung America's executive vice president, who was on stage with Bay to serve as a moderator, asked him a question to try to help him out and allow him to "wing it."

Industry associations unite to promote value of meetings

At PCMA Convening Leaders in Boston, a large group of industry professionals launched a new national campaign that seeks to showcase the value business meetings, conferences, conventions, incentive travel, trade shows and exhibitions provide to the global and local communities. The campaign — which shares the name of the coalition backing the effort, "Meetings Mean Business" — will create an information and advocacy platform that highlights the industry's pivotal role in creating jobs, generating economic value and driving business success.
