Airbnb presents a growing threat to hotel industry

The hotel industry can no longer ignore the Airbnb phenomenon and write it off as a wannabe competitor. One simple reason is that Airbnb has not disappeared from the scene as yet another new fad that bites the dust. Another more important one is that Airbnb's popularity and sales both seem to be rising t oo fast for comfort. In a recent faceoff, New York hotels and New York's attorney general called listings on the site as "illegal" hotels, while Airbnb called the officials' efforts a "government-sponsored fishing expedition."

CIC and Social Tables Partner on planning app

The Convention Industry Council and Social Tables recently partnered on and released Pocket Planner, a free app that's aimed at making event calculations easier. "[Pocket Planner] will automate manual processes, allowing meeting planners to spend more time on strategic tasks," says Dan Berger, CEO and founder of Social Tables.

New tool to fight room attrition penalties debuts

Roomer, an Israel-based online travel marketplace start-up, recently announced that it is entering the hotel meeting space with the debut of Roomer Partner Network (RPN). According to Richie Karaburun, Roomer Travel's Managing Director, USA, RPN will act as an "asset recovery tool" and "cost mitigation product" that prevents attrition.

California launches integrated cloud platform for state and local agencies
Government Executive
State and local government agencies across the nation's most-populous state will now have access to a new cloud platform that's being touted as the first such system to be deployed in the United States at the state level. CalCloud, developed and managed by IBM through a private-public partnership and administered through the California Department of Technology, is available to all state and local government agencies in the Golden State on a subscription basis.

Clandestine to clever: Tweets reveal government's human side

On June 6, the Twitter world was rocked by the entrance of a new player: the CIA. Its first tweet went viral, cropping up more than 300,000 retweets and garnering the agency more than 200,000 followers on the first day. Since then, the CIA has put out a mere 82 tweets to a crowd of more than 700,000 followers.
