Is personal space disappearing from the travel industry?

Over the past couple of weeks, three different planes have been diverted from their original flight plans because of unruly passengers. These disruptive individuals weren't threatening the safety of the other passengers. While each flight disruption was different, the cause of the problems were all the same: an invasion of personal space.

Zipping through airport security? TSA says 50 percent of travelers do

More than half the people passing through U.S. airports now receive preferential security treatment because they pose no clear threat to aviation safety, federal officials say. The shift has significantly reduced the lines at security checkpoints, according to the Transportation Security Administration, reflecting the goal of TSA Administrator John S. Pistole to move away from a "one-size-fits-all" approach to screening passengers.

Shutdown-averting spending bill would allow fed pay raise

When it comes to the federal employee pay raise, no news is good news. And that is exactly what feds received from House Republicans in the spending bill introduced on Sept. 9 to keep government open past Sept. 30. The $1.01 trillion continuing resolution makes no mention of the raise, meaning it would allow President Barack Obama's 1 percent, across-the-board 2015 pay bump to go into effect.

Finally, some good news for federal recruiters

Last October's government shutdown damaged the image of politicians more than federal workers, and the public largely views joining the civil service as a good career choice, a poll released Sept. 8 shows. Some 73 percent of respondents to the poll by The George Washington University expressed either "a lot" or "some" confidence in federal civilian workers, while only 25 percent indicated "a little" or "no" confidence.
