Contractors say shutdown forced them to reprioritize
Government Executive
As feared, the 16-day government shutdown forced contractors to scramble for cash, revise their schedules, and reconnect with their agency liaisons, according to trade association officials. "The good news is that most companies are putting folks back to work, which they should have been doing all along had there not been a shutdown," said Alan Chvotkin, executive vice president and counsel at the Professional Services Council. "Our member survey shows that a large percentage of member companies did receive one or more stop-work orders. And though most, but not all, of those have now been reversed, large numbers of those contracts were unnecessarily and inappropriately stopped."

Travelers are writing fewer and nicer online hotel reviews this year
Skift
Guests at U.S. hotels posted 25,000 fewer online reviews this summer than the same quarter last year. However, those reviews got more attention from hotel management and were more positive than those from previous years. TrustYou's quarterly report on review trends looked at more than 250,000 U.S. hotel reviews from more than 250 sources and social media networks this summer. The report found that travelers are writing fewer reviews, but that review scores and management response rates were on the rise throughout July, August and September.

Army strong: AUSA conference attendance grows over last year
Associations Now
In the face of the ongoing effects of sequestration, and coming hard on the heels of a partial government shutdown, it is a wonder that the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Association of the United States Army took place at all Oct. 21-23, let alone that its attendance numbers were substantial. While AUSA predicted strong attendance a week before the meeting, which took place in Washington, D.C., the actual numbers showed an improvement over the 2012 conference.

Take your conference to the next level with a mobile app
Liz Murphy
The International Association of Chiefs of Police recently hosted its annual conference in Philadelphia. More than 10,000 law enforcement professionals and 750 companies and vendors attended the event at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The sheer scale of the five-day convention could have easily become overwhelming and fragmented. But organizers of the IACP conference took a critical, proactive step to ensure attendees were able to get the most out of the event. They created a free mobile app for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets just for the conference.

Timeline: When to expect a possible pay raise, and other key fiscal deadlines
Government Executive
In just the past few weeks, the government shut down, reopened and skirted a default on its debts. We could all do without that kind of excitement for a while. A while, in this case, is less than three months, roughly the amount of time left until the current continuing resolution funding agencies expires. Absent a grand budget bargain between Republicans and Democrats in December, the beginning of 2014 will put us right back where we were in September and October 2013. There's one bright spot for federal workers on the horizon: It's looking more likely that they will get an across-the-board pay hike in 2014, the first such increase in three years.
