Virginia Beach talks meetings with associations, hotels

The city of Virginia Beach held a meeting. The formal name of the seminar was "Future of Government Meetings Forum." The gist: What can tourist sites and hotels do about the decline in government meetings? Al Hutchinson, vice president of the city’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, cited a "trifecta" of reasons for the dip: the recession, the scandal involving lavish conferences by the U.S. General Services Administration and sequestration-related cuts.

Business travel airfares forecast to decline in North America in 2014

Increased competition from low cost carriers and tighter corporate control of business travel will likely lead to a decline in short-haul business class and long-haul economy fares in North America in 2014 — unless the US Airways merger with American Airlines actually goes through and upsets the calculations. National scholarships for 2014 NEC accepted now through Dec. 4

Travel leaders still wary after shutdown

While few expected the federal government's recent shutdown to cause the country to default, the hospitality industry heaved a great sign of relief when Congress reached an agreement on Oct. 16. "We estimate that every day the government was closed, America's economy lost about $152 million in travel-related activity that won't be recovered," said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association.

Social media's story is now an old one. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have changed the game, altering the way people share information and interact with brands. The press release, once the gold standard for getting your message out, is now antiquated — as is the notion of the "press" to whom that information is released. Organizations that had once relied on media outlets to tell their stories are now themselves the media outlet, taking their message straight to their target audience. Travel leaders applaud FAA electronics ruling

The announcement that the Federal Aviation Administration would relax prohibitions on the use of electronic devices during commercial flights was immediately praised by the travel industry, leaders of which called the decision "commonsense" and "encouraging." "We're pleased the FAA recognizes that an enjoyable passenger experience is not incompatible with safety and security," U.S. Travel Association president and CEO Roger Dow said in a statement.
