Business travel spending up for 2013, eying increase in 2014

The travel industry has picked up the recession slack quite well, showing healthier figures in 2013. Business travel especially has picked up quickly, which is a testament to an improving economy and better business prospects in all arenas. In fact, recent reports state that U.S. businesses are all poised to spend more on business travel with a figure that could go up to $288.8 billion in 2014.

House bill would further cut government spending on conferences, travel

The U.S. House of Representatives passed another bill that would significantly reduce federal agencies' spending on travel and conferences on top of cuts already imposed by sequestration and a White House directive. The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2013, or DATA Act, easily passed with bipartisan support and a lone dissenting vote.

SGMP is currently offering a new Supplier Special membership promotion for a limited time only. This promotion provides for an alternative way to the standard Supplier membership procedure. Under this program, a supplier may join the national association without a planner match by being placed in the "At Large" chapter instead of a local chapter. Once a qualified match is approved, that supplier member will then also become a member of their requested local chapter.

GSA officially solicits sites for new FBI headquarters

The General Services Administration took the next step in the years-long process of moving the FBI out of its cramped and outdated J. Edgar Hoover Building headquarters. A notice on FedBizOpps.gov asks for site proposals from developers willing to donate or sell land in the District or Virginia or Maryland suburbs in exchange for the right to most likely demolish the four-decade-old Hoover building and develop a prestigiously located lot on Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest.
