Study: Bioplastics market to increase 5-fold by 2016
Canadian Plastics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The global bioplastics market will see a five-fold increase in production volumes by 2016, from 1.2 million tons to an anticipated 6 million tons. According to a new market forecast from the study from the University of Hannover, Germany, partially bio-based PET will continue to lead the field; it currently accounts for approximately 40 percent of the global bioplastics production capacity. Residual stress effect on rapid crack propagation in polyethylene pipes
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polyethylene has been used as a piping material since the mid-1950s, supplying various industries with a flexible, lightweight and tough product. Despite all the advantages of PE pipes over other pipe systems and their outstanding service record, field failures have been reported. Residual stress increases the stored strain energy prior to crack propagation in PE pipes, but tests suggest another effect related to crack shape must be at work. More

Super-tough polymer nanocomposite blends
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polymer nanocomposites are of interest because incorporation of a nanonscale filler confers attractive engineering properties. Organically modified clays, or organoclays, by virtue of their lamellar structure, offer especially high performance benefits when they are properly dispersed. Current research on PNs has shifted from studying the best-performing organoclay for a given polymer to more complex systems that include a third component, often a second polymer. More

Winter price freeze grips polymer markets
Plastics & Rubber Weekly    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Standard thermoplastic prices were more or less steady across the board in December, a development that surprised market participants. Instead of the usual price crash with producers offloading surplus stock during the final month of the year and buyers winding down for the festive season, supply seemed to be well under control and demand was not as bad as expected. World glass packaging market to be overtaken by plastics
Packaging International    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The world's glass packaging market will attain a value of $36.8 billion this year, but its growth will cap over the next decade due to being out-competed by plastics. British research company Visiongain indicates that emerging economies will initially need more glass packaging for personal care products, health care and premium food and beverages. However, the analysis also suggests that as producers seek to cut production costs, they will be pressured to find alternative packaging materials. More

Plastic Logic proposes a futuristic kind of paper
TIME    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief For all the guilt-tripping about dead trees, we still can't live without paper. But some day, we may be able to use flexible sheets of digital ink instead. At the Consumer Electronics Show, U.K.-based Plastic Logic demonstrated an E-Ink "tablet" dubbed the PaperTab, which was little more than a thick, floppy sheet of plastic, connected to a high-end Core processor from Intel. Each of these sheets can accept touch input, and can share data when in contact with one another. More

Reduced machining time and improved plug surface finish/performance may be obtained simply by using cutting tools designed to machine syntactic foam. CMT Materials, Inc. guidelines list and describe these tools, plus provide specific feed/speed rates for optimized machining in any machining center.

Performance Fiber
Zeus performance fibers are commonly used in the aerospace, automotive, and textile industries. They can be used to create a braided sleeve or over-braid that is both expandable and flexible. The woven braiding can then be placed over existing wire assemblies to guard against chaffing and provide additional chemical wear resistance. The material is also used as a component in filters (semiconductor filters included) and conveyer belts. MORE

Desktop machine turns recyclable plastics into filament for 3-D printers
Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Now that desktop 3-D printers are more affordable and compact, the world of DIY fabrication is quickly transforming the way we produce durable goods. Yet the filaments that 3-D printers use to assemble objects are expensive — MakerBot's ABS 1kg plastic filament will run you $50 a spool. Fortunately, Vermont Technical College student Tyler McNaney has invented the Filabot — a machine that allows anyone to make their own 3-D printing substrate from old recyclables sitting in the bin. Polymer grabs energy from water
Laboratory Equipment    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
MIT engineers have created a new polymer film that can generate electricity by drawing on a ubiquitous source: water vapor. The new material changes its shape after absorbing tiny amounts of evaporated water, allowing it to repeatedly curl up and down. Harnessing this continuous motion could drive robotic limbs or generate enough electricity to power micro- and nanoelectronic devices, such as environmental sensors. More

In the fight against plastics, mushrooms become an unlikely weapon
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the dead of winter, Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre want to talk about flip-flops. They're not planning a vacation, and this isn't just any old beachwear. They've designed their own beach sandals, with soles made entirely of mushroom fibers. They are 100 percent biodegradable. Petroleum-free and compostable. More
