Optical performance of gas-assist injection molding
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During gas-assist injection molding, the liquid polymer interacts in a complex manner with the gas being used to force it throughout the mold. The stress field generated by this interaction creates certain molecular orientations that become frozen-in as the molded part cools. Consequently, GAIM molded parts typically exhibit optical and mechanical anisotropies that may influence performance. One such result is birefringence, a directional discrepancy in refractive index. Bioplastic copolymer is foamed to treat bladder disease
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A foamed bioplastic is being developed in Germany as a drug carrier for treatment of common diseases of the urinary bladder such as overactive bladder. The bioplastic is made of a copolymer of derivatives of lactic and glycolic acids. Both are often made from sugar beets. More

How to optimize mold water design, setup and maintenance
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When trying to establish process control in plastic injection, watering the tool is a key variable that is often overlooked. Water setup and design are every bit as important as establishing and recording a repeatable process. How a mold is watered is key to a processor's goal of consistency. If during the design and development stage, watering is put on the back burner as an "unimportant" variable, the potential for lost process control is huge. More

    Apple's future is in plastics?
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Reports have surfaced that Apple may source a plastic casing from a U.S. electronic manufacturing service provider rather than one comprised of aluminum and glass. Apple has used a plastic polycarbonate housing in its iPhones before — the 3G and 3GS models — so such a design would not be unheard of. If Apple were to offer an iPhone model that returns to a plastic housing, that could boost demand for plastic suppliers. More

As manufacturing bounces back from recession, unions are left behind
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. manufacturers have added a half-million new workers since the end of 2009, making the sector one of the few bright spots in an otherwise weak recovery. And yet there were 4 percent fewer union factory workers in 2012 than there were in 2010, according to federal survey data. On balance, all of the job gains in manufacturing have been nonunion. More

Polymer sieve divides gases by size
Cardiff University via Futurity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new polymer efficiently separates gas mixtures by the size of the molecules, report researchers. Gas separation is crucial for many industrial processes, including obtaining nitrogen or oxygen from air and purifying natural gas or hydrogen. Currently, the most energy efficient method for separating gases involves polymer membranes, however, most polymers either let gases pass through slowly or are not selective towards one gas over another.
