Recycled plastic ties coming to some US railroads

The U.S. railroad is about to get a minor makeover. Axion International has won a $15 million contract to make railroad ties made from recycled plastic, the company announced recently. The railroad ties will specifically be made of Recycled Structural Composite, the signature recycled plastic composite developed by Axion in conjunction with Rutgers University in New Jersey. More

Dow Chemical Co., the largest U.S. chemical maker, posted fourth-quarter earnings that rose more than analysts estimated amid increasing profit from caustic soda and plastics. Net income almost tripled to $511 million, or 37 cents a share, from $172 million, or 8 cents, a year earlier, Midland, Michigan-based Dow said in a statement. More

With the growth in consumption, plastic production in India is likely to grow by 60 percent to touch 12.75 million tons by 2012, according to an industry body. "Plastic is an integral part of our life and its consumption is growing every year. We are expecting the production to grow by 60 percent in line with the consumption which will be around 12.75 million tons by fiscal year 2012," All India Plastics Manufacturers' Association President Yogesh Shah said. Beverage companies are getting squeezed by higher production costs across the board, but rising prices for plastic are posing the biggest threat to the price of a soda. Higher resin costs are pushing up the price of polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, the plastic used in a variety of consumer products such as soda bottles and clothing. Bottle-grade PET is up more than 21 percent from a year ago and more than 24 percent since late September, according to ICIS, which tracks petrochemicals data. More
