North American manufacturing on the rebound, but headwinds are gathering
Plastics Today
When manufacturing gets hit across the board, you can bet that the plastics industry is taking it on the chin, as well. Many plastic components suppliers and mold manufacturers are wrestling with higher prices and lead times that are stretching the supply chain tighter than ever.

Resin shortages continue to affect composites supply chain
Composites World
A supply shortage of epoxy, polyester and vinyl ester resins, caused by U.S. winter storms and a variety of factors, continue to make headlines and affect the composites industry.
As reported by Gardner Intelligence chief economist Michael Guckes in his latest Composites Fabricating Index column, supply chain difficulties continue to restrict production, “which, in the face of strong demand, has caused a meteoric rise in backlog activity.”

The ins and outs of using post-consumer resin in packaging
Canadian Plastics
Nothing is so powerful as an idea whose time has come, French author Victor Hugo once wrote, and the idea of using post-consumer resin in packaging has arrived with a vengeance.
Consumers are now demanding sustainable packaging options, and a growing number of brand owners, retailers, product manufacturers, and food producers have mandates to incorporate more recycled content in plastic bottles and bags.

How to successfully navigate environmental regulations
Plastics Today
Although focus on the pandemic momentarily shifted attention from environmental concerns, make no mistake, the heat is about to get turned back on. The fuel is a slew of legislation ranging from those under consideration at the state and local level, all the way up to federal bills such as “Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act of 2020” and the “Save Our Seas 2.0 Act.”

Oxygen permeation analyzer for bottles, pods, and other whole package forms
Plastics Technology
A new analytical instrument to measure the oxygen transmission rate of whole packages at ambient environmental conditions has been launched by Ametek Mocon. The Ox-Tran 2/48 analyzer targets package permeation testing in the food, beverage, and healthcare packaging application space, where knowing the precise rate of oxygen transmitting through a package at room temperature and room humidity conditions is critical to a product’s shelf life.

Trash to treasure: Central Minnesota plastics lab a new way to recycle
Park Rapids Enterprise
Much of the plastic dumped in recycling containers in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, is shipped away to be turned into plastic lumber.
But in a small room tucked in the corner of the recycling facility, Carl Zachmann is making something entirely different. He holds a small mold for making tin soldiers while a machine pumps it full of pink gooey plastic.
