Polymer coating kills superbugs
Discovery News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A simple coating could contain the biological bullet that kills the toughest germs. The polymer coating is already being used on contact lenses by two manufacturers. When used, the coating kills 99 percent of the bacteria and fungi it comes in contact with. It could also be used for medical devices such as catheters, reducing the need for harsh disinfectants and antibiotics. More

Real-time X-ray diffraction: Crystalline orientation during blown-film extrusion
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Blown-film extrusion is a commercial process used to produce high-volume polymeric films. The properties the polymeric films exhibit are controlled by the microstructure developed during their processing. Conventional manufacturing techniques use offline measurements on the processed polymer to empirically modify the process to obtain the desired product properties, but this trial-and-error procedure is time-consuming and expensive. Toward better understanding of solid-state shear pulverization
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solid-state shear pulverization is a novel, environmentally benign and continuous processing technique that applies high shear and compressive forces to polymeric materials, resulting in fragmentation and fusion steps in the solid state. One key advantage of SSSP over conventional melt-processing techniques is that SSSP overcomes physical hindrances such as thermodynamic barrier and viscosity mismatch to synthesize materials with desired structures. Polymer breast implant deters cancer cells
National Cancer Institute via Nanowerk News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new type of breast implant developed by researchers at Brown University may be able to deter breast cancer cell regrowth. Made from a common, federally approved polymer, the implant is the first to be modified at the nanoscale in a way that causes a reduction in the blood-vessel architecture that breast cancer tumors depend upon, while also attracting healthy cells into breast tissue. World's largest plastics recycling plant opens in UK
Northcliffe Media    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A £15 million plant that will "transform" recycling has been opened in Lincolnshire, U.K. It is hoped the project will more than double the amount of "bottle-grade" plastic created in Britain. And by combining with an existing site, it has created the world's largest plastics recycling plant. The Continuum Recycling venture is the result of an alliance between Coca-Cola Enterprises and ECO Plastics. More

Does virus-laden bag give plastics industry a new issue?
The Oregonian    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
You can bet that plastics-industry lobbyists were feeling more exhilarated than queasy when they read the story about a reusable grocery bag implicated in a norovirus outbreak that sickened seven Beaverton, Ore., girls. The industry has been fighting attempts to fight local and state bans on single-use plastic check-out bags, and one of the arguments has been that reusable bags are unsanitary. More

New nanostructure for batteries keeps going and going
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory via PhysOrg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For more than a decade, scientists have tried to improve lithium-based batteries by replacing the graphite in one terminal with silicon, which can store 10 times more charge. But after just a few charge/discharge cycles, the silicon structure would crack and crumble, rendering the battery useless. Now researchers have found a solution: a cleverly designed double-walled nanostructure that lasts more than 6,000 cycles, far more than needed by electric vehicles or mobile electronics. More

Performance Fiber
Zeus performance fibers are commonly used in the aerospace, automotive, and textile industries. They can be used to create a braided sleeve or over-braid that is both expandable and flexible. The woven braiding can then be placed over existing wire assemblies to guard against chaffing and provide additional chemical wear resistance. The material is also used as a component in filters (semiconductor filters included) and conveyer belts. MORE
