Eco-weeds: Ford, Ohio St. try dandelions as rubber source
USA Today    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Talk about a sustainable resource! Ford and Ohio St. researchers are working on dandelion roots as a potential source of rubber. Apparently the milky-white goo that seeps from dandelion roots can be used to make a rubber that Ford says could eventually be used in the plastics in cup holders, floor mats and interior trim. How to control migration of slip agents in polyethylene films
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plastic packaging systems are ubiquitous in manufacturing. They are an integral component of applications from food to industrial shipping, but their usefulness and efficiency depend critically on fulfilling a number of technical requirements. For example, the plastic films on high-speed packaging lines must show adequate machinability — i.e., avoid sticking to metals and other parts of the handling lines—a characteristic that is determined mainly by the level of friction between the film and equipment. Positive outlook for plastics to fuel technology in US
Waste Management World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The American Chemistry Council has published a study conducted by environmental consultancy, 4R Sustainability Inc., on increasing opportunities for plastics to fuel "conversion technologies" in the U.S. In 2009, the United States recycled more than 4 billion pounds of plastics. The report demonstrates the ability to recycle and recover plastics through technologies including those that convert plastics into oil and other fuels. Many of these technologies are already being implemented on a commercial scale in Europe and Asia. More

France will not pass phthalate ban, says ECPI
European Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The European Council for Plasticisers and Intermediates is confident that a French ban on phthalates will not be passed at the Senate, as the bill only got past the National Assembly because of MPs' 'political agenda.' In an interview with European Plastics News, ECPI sector group manager Maggie Saykali said the bill to ban phthalates, parabens and alkylphenols, proposed by Yvan Lachaud, is not based on scientific evidence. This processor is raising its prices; what about you?
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The past weeks have seen a near flood of price hike announcements from suppliers of plastics and plastic additive, but very rare are such announcements from processors. Are processors just more low-key, do they not have the power to try to push through a blanket price hike, or don't they have the personnel to actively plan their price increases? More
