Paper and plastic exports increase in the 1st quarter
Resource Recycling
Recovered material exports were up in the first three months of 2021 compared with the prior year. India dominated the paper export market, and Canada brought in nearly a third of all exported plastic.
The U.S. Census Bureau, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, released March 2021 export figures this month, allowing for a first-quarter analysis.

Index moderates after record highs
Plastics Technology
The Gardner Business Index for plastics processing fell by more than two points in April, to 62.7, after posting all-time highs in the two preceding months. All activity measures fell from their prior month readings, with the greatest decline observed in new orders and production. While April’s readings were lower than in March, all readings remained above 50, indicating a slowing acceleration in industry activity.

Sector focuses on PP technology to boost plastic recycling
Packaging News
Data suggests that PP accounts for around 20% of the world’s plastic, mostly used in pots, tubs, trays and films for food packaging.
It is also prevalent in non-food household and personal care products, which complicates recycling the 700,000 tonnes per annum used in the U.K. alone.
PP packaging usually goes to waste-to-energy, landfill or is down-cycled into low-performance applications.

Researchers find potential use for recycled plastic in concrete
Phys.org
Millions of tons of plastic are discarded each day, and for much of it there are few options for conventional recycling. But that material could soon find a new and beneficial use thanks to microbes being harnessed by Montana State University scientists.

Understanding roll deflection in sheet processing
Plastics Technology
Many of the older sheet stacks still in use today were made for polystyrene or other easily deformed polymers. In these stacks, the top roll was usually smaller in diameter to facilitate an easier and safer “string-up” of the line. Since the polymer contact time with the top roll is only a few inches, the smaller roll causes almost no cooling.

As resin cost increase the need for purging is even more important. Why waste prime/virgin resin and subject good resin to a degrading heat history. Our goal is help you get your machines cleaned quickly and efficiently with minimal downtown in your production.
Phoenix Plastics Purge Benefits:
Increase productivity
Reduce machine downtime
Allow for faster changeovers
Avoid lost time pulling screws
Reduction of scrap and material waste
Removes traces of contamination and build up in the barrel

Chemical recycling of plastic waste: Working towards complete recycling
Recycling Magazine
While versatility is one of plastic’s most attractive qualities, this can limit its ability to be recycled using traditional mechanical recycling methods for several reasons, including: 1) the many different kinds of plastic, 2) the presence of more than one kind of plastic in the same product and 3) some plastics are designed not to melt in order to increase their mechanical and thermal resistance.
