Australian industry taking green steps
Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While Australia has begun a long journey toward upping its use of biodegradable plastics and introducing more environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, there is much to be done to alter consumer perceptions of plastics, industry bodies say. A national plastics recycling survey shows a rise of only 2.2 percent in the volume of plastics recycled in Australia since the previous survey, about a year ago. More

Morphology and electrical properties of intrinsically conducting polymer composites
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Intrinsically conducting polymer composites are a novel class of materials that combine the mechanical properties of conventional polymers and the electrical properties of conducting polymers. They can possess relatively high conductivities and dielectric constants, which can be easily tuned from insulating to conducting states through chemical processes. ICPCs are light and flexible relative to metals, and both reflect and absorb electromagnetic radiation.1–3These properties make ICPCs very promising for electromagnetic interference shielding and other applications, such as organic solar cells, flexible transparent displays and supercapacitors. A new platform for creating versatile nonwoven mats
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Composite fibrous assembles of nanoparticle-biopolymer fibers are useful for filtration, sensing, and tissue-engineering applications. They also show improved mechanical, electrical, and structural characteristics over individual components. And biopolymers are widely used in biomedical, pharmaceutical, and food-processing applications due to their biocompatibility and unique chemical properties. Notably, chitin, a biopolymer found in crustacean shells, is an abundant natural polysaccharide that is renewable and biodegradable. However, because of its limited solubility, it must be modified into a more useful deacetlyated derivative called chitosan. More

Better optical parts, faster through overmolding
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Engel has introduced new injection molding technology specifically aimed at the production of optical components, offering machines with plasticizing unit components optimized for running transparent polymers and an overmolding process to create thick lenses. Called optimelt, the process starts with the production of a pre-molded part that is recoated with additional layers (usually of the same material) in one or more subsequent stages. More
