Optimum dispersion of single-walled nanotubes in epoxy resins
SPE    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Carbon nanotubes are novel materials with unique physical, mechanical and chemical properties that can find use in a wide range of applications. The research community devotes enormous attention to the incorporation of CNTs into the next generation of advanced structural materials. Appropriate use of CNTs can give materials thermal, mechanical, optical, and electrical advantages. However, there are many open questions concerning the nanotube dispersion within a material, the interactions between the matrix and the nanotubes and the final properties of any given nanocomposite. Supercritical carbon dioxide as an effective tool for composite preparation
SPE    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tissue engineering therapy deals with the development of biological substitutes using a combination of cells and materials to repair or replace damaged tissues. The production of bioactive and biodegradable scaffolds, which provide a temporary 3-D micro-environment for cells and guide cellular processes, is one of the most critical steps in tissue engineering. A variety of natural and synthetic polymers and their composites have been synthesized by various techniques, including solvent casting and melt molding combined with particulate leaching, freeze drying, and gas foaming, to obtain highly porous, cytocompatible structures with suitable mechanical properties and biodegradability. One of the most important drawbacks of these techniques is the presence of residual organic solvents. More

European plastics firms unveil plan to boost recycling levels
Recycling Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A group of European plastics converters, recyclers and collectors have completed a two-year project that looks at steps that can be taken to boost the use of post-consumer plastic scrap. The culmination of the project is the release of a new program, called EuCertPlast, which implements existing CEN standard 14343 on post-consumer plastics recycling. Participants in the program say that the new standard will boost the use of post-consumer plastic. More

A 'method' to help solve ocean waste madness
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's safe to say ocean waste is an enormous problem, and the problem isn't going away anytime soon. However, household and personal care company Method is working to turn the waste into a packaging solution. "We think the best way to do that is to prove that solutions exist, even at a small scale," the company wrote. "Later this year, we will be launching a product in the world's first packaging made from a blend of PCR plastic and recovered ocean plastic. Recovered from beaches by method employees, in fact." Air-assisted fabrication paves the way for low-cost graphene solar cells    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Using a simple air-assisted fabrication process, researchers from the Small Systems Laboratory at the University of Louisville have demonstrated large, position-dependent, near-infrared-induced photocurrents in single layer graphene assemblies. Position-dependent photocurrents exhibited an increase when the positive electrode was illuminated, a decrease when the negative electrode was illuminated, and a negligible response when the area between the electrodes was illuminated. Plastic too will get a green face
The Hindu    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Biocampus, the research wing attached to Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies Thiruvalla, has developed bioplastics, or reinforced plastics, which is claimed to be biodegradable to a large extent and cheaper to produce. Powdered cellulose obtained from natural fibers such as jute and water hyacinth is used as reinforcement in polymers to make the product, according to C. Balagopalan, resident dean and director of research at Macfast School of Biosciences. The organic content far exceeds the inorganic one. The product could be used to make buckets, mugs, dashboards, chairs, tables, cutlery, bathroom doors, etc., Balagopalan said. More

PC's keeping up with the times
Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For many years, CDs, DVDs and other forms of optical media dominated the PC market and provided double-digit growth. But changing technology and customer preference has greatly diminished CD sales, leading PC makers such as Bayer MaterialScience LLC to look elsewhere. BMS executive Jim Chrise — who serves as senior vice president of the firm's commercial PC operations in North America — believes there's good reason for optimism at BMS, which is a unit of plastics and chemicals giant Bayer AG of Leverkusen, Germany.
