Injection molding without the drying
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The injection molding industry is struggling to improve quality at a time when costs need to be reduced. While efforts to reduce costs focus largely on reducing energy consumption, most quality issues are raised about the appearance of molded parts. Although other matters such as dimensional integrity and mechanical performance are important, the appearance of a part after ejection from a mold is always the first thing to be checked. More

Graphene reactions driven by substrate not reactant
Chemistry World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In chemical reactions, the reactants determine the level of reactivity. Not for graphene, though — the 1-atom-thick sheets of carbon can react vigorously or barely at all to the same chemicals, depending on the substrate they're sitting on. U.S. chemists have explored the electron "puddling" phenomenon behind this strange behavior. More

Small company makes recyclable plastic cups
The Daily Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A small company in Arlington, Wash., is changing the way beverage cups are made. What makes the cups produced by MicroGreen Polymers better than the average red plastic party cups that people tend to throw in the trash is that InCycle is made from recycled water bottles through a less costly process that results in a lighter cup its makers say keeps beer colder longer, doesn't crack and can be thrown into the recycling bin. Popular Science    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What you might not expect when you're expecting: a company that wants to 3-D print a statuette of your unborn child. Japanese engineering outfit Fasotec will gladly take an MRI scan of an expecting mother's fetus and using its BioTexture modeling software to capture 3-D data related to human tissues convert that scan into a CAD file, and then print it up in resin. It's called the "Shape of Angel" service. More
