Upcycling polyethylene plastic waste into valuable molecules
University of California - Santa Barbara via ScienceDaily
When we started using plastics about 70 years ago, not much thought — if any — was given to the implications of their lifespan and the fact that they can take centuries to decompose. Consequently, as plastics have diversified and become easier to manufacture, the planet is now straddling some 8.3 billion tons of the stuff — almost every bit of plastic ever produced — without enough technology or incentives to shrink that growing pile.

Hybrid 3D printing technique creates plastic-metal structures all at once
3DPrint.com
Until now, metal and plastic additive manufacturing technologies have been incompatible with each other because their melting points are very different. Moreover, current 3D printers employ either plastic or metal only, and the conventional method to metal coat 3D plastic structures is not environment-friendly and yields poor results.

The highest heat-resistant plastic ever is developed from biomass
Phys.org
The use of biomass-derived plastics is one of the prime concerns to establish a sustainable society, which is incorporated as one of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, the use of most of the biomass-derived plastics is limited due to their low heat resistance.

Weekly resin report: Spot PE market posts 1st price decline since April
Plastics Today
Polyethylene prices eased a cent last week, a small yet notable retreat from the average $0.19/lb gains garnered during the previous four months. The PE market is still categorically tight, but the rally seems to be running its course, raising some doubt that the current $0.05/lb increase nominated for October will bear fruit, reports the PlasticsExchange in its Market Update.

All change for manufacturers post COVID-19?
Medical Plastics News
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the medical plastics industry. Single-use plastic, due to its disposable nature, has been important in the battle to contain the virus. This demand for plastic products looks set to continue.

Creating value from plastic waste
AAAS
Plastic waste presents a number of environmental problems. Although only a small fraction of it enters rivers, lakes and oceans, it can be transformed there into micro- and nanoplastics that are harmful to aquatic organisms. When plastic waste is buried in landfills or incinerated, it generates heat and carbon dioxide.

Promoted by HP 3D Printing
In this business climate, there are many advantages to a "pay-as-you-go" business model when the focus is on outcomes. Capital expenses are transformed into operating expenses, spread over time. Paying on a usage basis puts the focus on your business results rather than equipment or transactions. HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solutions are reinventing design and manufacturing. From accelerating design cycles, to printing full-color functional parts, to running efficient volume production with repeatable part quality.

Present and future trends in biodegradable polymers
Plastics Today
Demand for biodegradable polymers has been rising as a result of environmental concerns regarding the use of nonrenewable materials. Styrofoam and other plastics are among the most produced materials used for packaging and other applications. Such materials cause land and water pollution and have been linked in some studies to health problems in humans and animals.

Rising prices for PE, PVC; others flat to down
Plastics Technology
The trajectory of prices of the five volume commodity resins was upward through September; but starting last month, a reversal was underway for most of these resins, possibly excepting PE and PVC. Factors in the continued flat-to-downward trajectory for PP, PS and PET included expectations of improved supply availability, lower feedstock prices, slowed seasonal demand and loss of export opportunities due to higher prices.

The challenges, realities and potential of sustainable 3D printing
TCT Magazine
Daniel O'Connor writes: "Let’s put aside the political debates surrounding climate change and say that we should all do our bit. I, for instance, feel a great sense of achievement when I remember to wash and take a reusable cup to my local hipster coffee establishment. That was until I read a piece in Anthropocene Magazine by Pierre-Oliver Roy, which states:
'It would take between 20 and 100 uses for a reusable cup to make up for the greenhouse gas emissions of a single-use cup. For ecosystem quality indicators, it could take more than 1,000 uses.'”

Production materials are critical in prototyping
Machine Design
Prototyping: a term as common to product developers and engineers as flour is to bakers. In its basic form, a prototype is a physical representation of an idea. After the idea is sketched out on paper, then designed in a CAD program, it’s time to build a prototype.
