What will your design cost to produce?
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a design engineer, you are under tremendous pressure to create quality products that differentiate your company. Of course, your company is under tremendous pressure too, especially in this economic environment. In the never-ending battle for market leadership, design engineers play a larger role than they may realize in determining a company's success. But, it's not just about which company has the best products; it's also about which company does a better job of controlling its product costs. More

Differentiating structure and stability in high-performance thermoplastics
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polyaryletherketones are a class of melt-processable thermoplastics with a combination of physical and mechanical properties such as high strength, toughness and resistance to wear that make them useful for a number of applications. In the past few years, different polymerization technologies have produced several new grades of these high-performance polymers and made new applications possible. However, effective characterization methods are needed to differentiate these materials, so that the most appropriate base resin may be chosen to meet specific application demands. More

Acrylic acid-modified middle-deacetylated chitosan as a paraquat adsorber
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The naturally occurring biopolymer chitin is found in the cell walls of fungi and in the exoskeletons of crustaceans. Alongside its deacetylated form chitosan, it has been extensively used in biomaterials, medicines, biotechnology, environmental engineering, wound dressing and wastewater treatment. However, middle-deacetylated chitosan — where the degree of deacetylation is around 45 percent — has a much more specific application. More

A step toward stronger polymers
MIT News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many of the objects we encounter are made of polymers — long chains of repeating molecules. Networks of polymers form man-made materials such as plastics, as well as natural products such as rubber and cellulose. Within all of these polymeric materials, there are structural flaws at the molecular level. To form an ideal network, each polymer chain would bind only to another chain. However, in any real polymeric material, a significant fraction of the chains instead bind to themselves, forming floppy loops. More

Hurricane Sandy impacts materials market
Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief The impact of the Hurricane Sandy wasn't as bad as initially feared. The primary effect was the temporary shutdown of a pair of polypropylene resin plants — one operated by Braskem Americas in Marcus Hook, Pa., and one by Phillips 66 in Linden, N.J. As of Nov. 2, both plants had power restored, but had yet to restart resin production. More

For material producers, sustainability remains at the forefront of packaging innovation
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you're in the plastic packaging industry, you better get used to the color green. What was once considered a trendy buzzword, sustainability is now driving innovation in an industry that is all too familiar with receiving the blunt of an environmental backlash. After all, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculates that containers and packaging make up the largest category of municipal solid waste in the country, at 30.3 percent of the total waste stream. Iran bans export of polymers, other petchem products, some metals
Platts    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Iranian government has banned the export of petrochemical products, including polymers, as a measure to "support national production," the Islamic Republic News Agency said, quoting the country's Consumer and Producers Protecting Agency. The list, which included polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride and PET, was part of the 50 industrial and agricultural products restricted for export sales. More

'Smart' polymers allow more subtle control and timing of drug delivery
National Institute of Materials Science via AZoM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Better control over the delivery of drugs to specific sites in the body at specific times would reduce unwanted side effects and improve medical treatment dramatically. "Smart" polymers are promising materials for controlling drug delivery, since they change their properties in response to specific stimuli. More

Study: Consumers prefer clear plastic packaging
Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Klockner Pentaplast of America Inc. has issued results of a study it funded showing that products in clear plastic clamshell packaging are more than 400 percent more attractive to consumers than identical products in printed paperboard boxes. The results showed that plastic clamshell-packaged items were easier to find and were viewed more often and for longer than printed paperboard boxes. More

Researchers observe, control and optimize the growth of individual carbon nanotubes
National Institute of Standards and Technology via    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers have used an environmental scanning transmission electron microscope to control the size and placement of iron nanoparticles in order to catalyze the growth of carbon nanotubes on a silicon oxide substrate. Large-scale synthesis of carbon nanotubes for low-cost field emission displays requires stringent control on nanotube length, diameter and surface density. More
