Self-healing plastic 'skin' feels touch
Stanford University via Futurity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new type of synthetic "skin" is the first material that can both sense subtle pressure and heal itself when torn or cut. The advance, described in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, could lead to smarter prosthetics or resilient personal electronics that repair themselves. The researchers succeeded by combining two ingredients — the self-healing ability of a plastic polymer and the conductivity of a metal. More

Rheological understanding of polymer-filler interactions
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The rheological properties of polymer melts are of great importance because the viscoelasticity of a material must often be tailored to meet specific process and application requirements. Filled composites exhibit a wide range of viscoelastic properties, dependent on interfacial interactions and how the filler is dispersed in the polymer matrix. Using a nanofiller instead of a microfiller significantly alters the rheology because the much larger surface area of nanoparticles gives rise to different filler-filler and/or polymer-filler interactions. Mechanical properties and failure modes of polymer-matrix-composite laminates
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polymer-matrix-composite laminates are one of the most advanced composites, widely used not only in the weight-sensitive aerospace industry, but also in marine, armor, automobile and civil engineering applications. Specifically, woven fabric-reinforced composites are finding increasing use in high-performance structural applications because of their in-plane balanced properties, enhanced fracture toughness, impact resistance and damage tolerance. For the Bank of Canada's new $20 bill, plastic is fantastic
The Toronto Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Bank of Canada has one word when it comes to making new bank notes: plastics. Well, to be honest, they prefer to say polymer. But it's the same thing. And there really is a great future in it. Canadians are about to see for themselves with the new $20 bill recently launched into circulation. On the subject of shopping bags, environmentalists bicker over which is best — paper or plastic? But there's no debate on bank notes: plastic's fantastic. More

Stronger than a speeding bullet
MIT News Office    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Providing protection against impacts from bullets and other high-speed projectiles is more than just a matter of brute strength. While traditional shields have been made of bulky materials such as steel, newer body armor made of lightweight material such as Kevlar has shown that thickness and weight are not necessary for absorbing the energy of impacts. A new study has shown that even lighter materials may be capable of doing the job just as effectively. More

'Nanowelding' taken to the limits as specific bonds are cut and formed
Chemistry World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a remarkable demonstration of the extreme limits of nanoscale engineering, researchers from the U.S. and China have used the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope to cleave and form selected chemical bonds on a complex molecule. The work marks another step along the road of ever-increasing control of single-molecule manipulations. More
