America's plastic makers call on congress to support EPA's 1st-ever national recycling goal
Plastics Today
As part of its recognition of America Recycles Day on Nov. 17, America’s plastic makers called on Congress to work with industry to prioritize recycling legislation in 2021.
“The plastics industry has set an ambitious goal of reusing, recycling, or recovering 100% of plastic packaging in the U.S. by 2025,” said Joshua Baca, Vice President, Plastics, for the American Chemistry Council.

Engineers used novel solvent-based method to recycle plastics
The Science Times
Engineers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have created a new solvent-based method in recycling plastics, particularly the multi-layered plastics used in food and medicine packaging.
Multi-layered plastics are used on these products because of its heat resistance and oxygen and moisture control properties ensuring storage stability to food items and medicine. However, their utility comes with a price as they are hard to recycle using existing methods.

Weekly resin report: Trading activity slackens in response to unyielding pricing
Plastics Today
Material availability in the spot resin market continued to improve last week, although overall supplies remained tight and transactions were generally challenging to complete, reports the PlasticsExchange in its Market Update. Processor inquiries continued to flow into its trading desk, but differences in participants’ pricing ideas and outlooks kept volumes from reaching even average levels.

A promising production model for bioplastics
Earth 911
Once hailed as a miracle material, plastic has turned into a problem of global proportions.
Prized for its plasticity, today plastic is used in or wrapped around almost everything. Despite serious environmental problems, that ubiquity makes it impossible to simply quit using plastic. In the search for an environmentally friendly alternative, bioplastics have shown a lot of promise.

Attention injection molders: 3D printing is your friend
Plastics Today
Whether a part is being 3D printed or injection molded, an effective design strategy will enable iterations and optimizations before manufacturing begins and adjustments become much more onerous. Down the line, it will accelerate time to market and increase profitability.

Audi working on recycling method for automotive plastics
Plastics Today
A large number of components in automobiles are made from plastics. They have to meet exacting safety, heat resistance and quality requirements. That is why, so far, only petroleum-based materials have been suitable for manufacturing plastic components in automobiles that are subjected to particularly intensive wear.

Promoted by HP 3D Printing
In this business climate, there are many advantages to a "pay-as-you-go" business model when the focus is on outcomes. Capital expenses are transformed into operating expenses, spread over time. Paying on a usage basis puts the focus on your business results rather than equipment or transactions. HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solutions are reinventing design and manufacturing. From accelerating design cycles, to printing full-color functional parts, to running efficient volume production with repeatable part quality.

An easier, more cost-effective way to bond cured silicone to plastics
Plastics Today
The low surface energy of cured silicone makes adhesion difficult, notably when it is applied to plastics. General Silicones has developed a technology that allows manufacturers to easily cut and apply silicone sheets to products using a thin polyurethane-based layer. The patented Compo-SiL technology reportedly allows the efficient processing and durable bonding of cured silicone in mass production quantities.

General-purpose screws on the comeback?
Plastics Technology
The “general-purpose screw” can trace its design back to the 1960s. The idea was to have one screw design capable of handling a range of polymers. Back then, the number of polymers was limited compared with today and the competition for production efficiency was not as great. So the concept made some sense.
