Effect of nanosilica on vulcanizates of natural and reclaimed rubber
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polymers containing nanoparticles such as nanoscale silica, layered silicates or carbon nanotubes have attracted interest because of the extraordinary material properties they can possess. The incorporation of microscale and larger inorganic fillers into organic polymers has been scientifically well explored. But there is still much to learn as the size of the inorganic components shrinks into the nanodimensions. The tremendous increase in surface area gives rise to entirely new properties to be engineered. More

Many countries and regions are facing the so-called world food problem. To increase food production, these countries often resort to pesticide and fertilizer use on a large scale to improve harvests, which is not only a waste of resources but also harmful to human health and the environment. Slow-release carriers have received considerable attention because they can reduce this usage and, consequently, the environmental burden of pesticides and fertilizers. More

Biodegradable plastics to go mainstream soon? Look to cars for the answer
Singularity Hub    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief Every Earth Day, we're reminded that common petroleum-based plastics are durable and cheap, but many aren't biodegradable or recycled. The solution to the plastics problem is straightforward and fairly well known: We need to identify degradable bioplastics as replacements and adopt their use as soon as possible. Though a handful of companies are producing bioplastics that are seeing commercial use, such as in grocery bags, the materials just haven’t gone mainstream ... yet. More
