New-home sales give up some ground
The Arizona Republic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The housing recovery, which slowed over the summer as mortgage rates rose, appears to be back in full swing as 2013 draws to a close. New-home sales slipped 2.1 percent in November, but totals for prior months were revised sharply higher and the report solidly beat economists' estimates, the Census Bureau said. More

More people moving to Texas than any other state
Austin Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you're new to Texas or you've got new neighbors, you aren't alone. The Lone Star State topped Allied Van Lines' Magnet State Report for the ninth year in a row, meaning more people are moving to Texas than any other state. Texas had a net relocation gain of 1,914 families in 2013. The number factors in the inbound and outbound moves performed by Allied Van Lines. Coming in a distant second was Florida with 1,115 net moves. More

Home builders poised to ride jobs wave
The Wall Street Journal (Login may be required)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mortgage rates have been the crucial variable for home builders this year. Next year it may be jobs instead. This has, on balance, been a good year for home builders. But rising interest rates in the summer put a dent in sales that spooked investors, sending the S&P home-building index down 29 percent from its peak this year in May to its September trough. More

Contradictory housing data makes 2014 a bit of a maze for forecasters
HousingWire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What can we make of the seeming incongruity of indicators in the housing market as 2013 comes to a close? Mortgage applications recently hit a 13-year low. Existing home sales fell for the third consecutive month — and for the first time on a year-over-year basis in quite some time. Pending home sales also fell for the third consecutive month. But home builder sentiment rose significantly, we saw an enormous spike in housing starts, and existing home prices continue to creep up, although more slowly than they rose earlier in the year.
