Estimated $15 billion budget gap poised to dominate Texas Legislature

The new Legislature opens for business today, after finally getting budget details showing lawmakers are so many billions in the hole that some of the state's most favored programs are at risk of big cuts. For the first time in memory, Texas may cut support for public schools. State colleges and universities also are at risk, and the Republican-controlled Legislature may bring down a hatchet — for the second time in a decade — on social programs. More

The Texas House Republican Caucus on Monday overwhelming endorsed incumbent Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, for another term despite loud protests from tea party groups that insisted on a more conservative leader. Straus received 70 votes from 100 members attending the caucus meeting. The vote is nonbinding but virtually guarantees Straus' re-election today when the Legislature opens a new session. More

In what may be a hollow victory for his political opponents, who still must grapple with his skillful redrawing of the state's political maps in 2003, former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, was sentenced to three years in prison. On Nov. 24, a state court jury found DeLay guilty of money laundering and conspiracy for funneling corporate money to candidates in state races through his political action committee in 2002. More

Gene Green of Houston and Ted Poe of Humble afternoon took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony for a freeway interchange in Baytown, with police nearby, the Houston Chronicle reported. Congressional aides made an extra call to make sure that officers would be at the Baytown event. More

On the eve of a Katie Couric interview on Austin's job market, the city was ranked as having the third best employment prospects in the U.S. Forbes cited the city's low unemployment, about 7.1 percent, and low job-seekers per opening ratio, about 2.39 to one. The magazine said Austin has many assets that have helped it weather the downturn: It's a state capital and major convention center, especially for the music industry, and home to the University of Texas and a wealth of technology companies. Dallas-area pre-owned home sales see less of a drop in December

North Texas pre-owned home sales fell again in December — but not as much as in recent months. Sales of pre-owned single-family homes by real estate agents dropped 6 percent last month compared with a year earlier. That's less of a decline than the 25 percent decrease in November and the 30 percent dive in October. "By comparison, we're not doing too badly," said James Gaines, an economist with the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. "January and February should run something like this." More

The Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority says 2011 will see progress toward upgrading U.S. 77 to an interstate-quality roadway from Brownsville to Corpus Christi, where it connects with I-37. Today, motorists traveling portions of U.S. 77 are forced to reckon with speed zones and traffic lights in the communities of Driscoll and Rivera. In Lyford, at U.S. 77 and the Texas 56 Spur, drivers confront an un-interstate-like flashing yellow caution signal hanging over the middle of the intersection — although that is about to change. More
