Social media: It's where your customers are
Contracting Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When the bank robber, Willie Sutton, was asked why he robbed banks, he responded simply (and with an implied "Duh!"), "Because that's where the money is." Why should you get involved with social media? Because that's where your customers are! If you became aware of a home and garden show that would be attended by 35 percent of adults in your community, would you want to exhibit? Even if the show attendance skewed towards younger adults, 35 percent is a huge number. You would want to be there, right? More

Homebuilder DR Horton posts quarterly loss
The Associated Press via Amarillo Globe-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
D.R. Horton Inc. says it lost money in its fiscal first quarter, reversing a year-ago profit, as the housing market continued to struggle. The homebuilder closed on fewer houses and revenue fell by nearly one-third. Chairman Donald R. Horton said that despite more affordable housing and low interest rates, the market is still plagued by rising foreclosures, a glut of homes for sale and tight mortgage-lending standards. More

The Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texas officials granted an air permit for a proposed Corpus Christi power plant despite calls from federal regulators to delay approval of the controversial request. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted 2-0 in favor of the permit for the Las Brisas Energy Center, which would power 650,000 homes by burning petroleum coke, a coal-like oil refinery byproduct. The permit, which clears the way for the plant's construction, describes the facility's emissions and how it will limit them. More

The Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Though the Texas legislative session is still a newborn just over 2 weeks old, when legislators are usually working only a few short days a week the Senate chamber this week has been humming. Working late into the night Tuesday to debate and give initial approval to the divisive voter identification bill. Planning a lengthy debate Wednesday on the same bill to expedite its approval. Creating committees and setting detailed budget hearings for next week, earlier than usual. More

TCEQ cracks down on septic tank treatment
KXII-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Thousands of Grayson County, Texas, residents who own septic tanks could soon find themselves in some hot water with environmental regulators. More than 2,000 aerobic septic tanks in the county are spraying untreated water onto the ground and into the air. Recently, Grayson County commissioners approved a timeline to step up enforcement of a state law that requires that all such septic tanks are properly treated and registered with the health department. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requires that all aerobic septic systems be treated by a licensed maintenance provider three times a year. More

Consumers, watch your wallets
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texas lawmakers may end up looking to drinkers, drivers and shoppers to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars to help fill the state's massive budget gap. Even though the Legislature is trying to fill the hole without raising taxes, its budget-writing arm is recommending hundreds of ways to raise money — some of them targeting consumers. More

Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The voter ID legislation passed by the Texas Senate on Wednesday night may be controversial, but it's a familiar debate, as is the issue of "sanctuary cities." Less well known but no less controversial are many of the provisions found in more than three dozen immigration-related bills filed so far. Some Hispanic Republicans in the Texas House say they are not going to support bills they believe are too extreme. More

The action by the Army's "sanity board," as the panel is called, is a key step in prosecutors' efforts to try Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan on capital murder charges here. It clears the way for military authorities to call a trial. More

The Associated Press via The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A suspicious package delivered to Sen. John Cornyn's suburban Dallas office Wednesday triggered an evacuation of the top two floors of the sprawling building where the office is located, police said. It was later deemed not to be a threat. The package was delivered about 10:30 a.m. to Cornyn's 11th floor office in Farmers Branch, Deputy Police Chief Mark Young said.
