NAHB Urges OSHA to Withdraw Silica Rule
On February 11, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) requested that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) withdraw a proposed rule that would drastically lower the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of crystalline silica for the construction industry. The rule also requires impractical medical surveillance of construction industry workers, extensive and costly recordkeeping processes, and restrictions on certain construction site work practices, which contradict existing safety procedures. Given the many problems associated with the proposed rule, NAHB is urging OSHA to withdraw it, and instead, treat it as an advance notice of a proposed rule. Doing so will allow the agency time to collect more comprehensive data and determine how best to align the rule with current industry practices. Read the full press release.

Building Industry Forum
All members are invited to attend the Texas Association of Builders first Building Industry Forum that will be held during TAB's winter board meetings on Wednesday, February 26 from 12:45 – 2:45 p.m. at the Driskill Hotel in Austin.

The Building Industry Forum is hosted by TAB's Multifamily Council and has been designed to provide relevant information to all members of the Texas Association of Builders. A goal of the Multifamily Council is to broaden its appeal to be more inclusive of single family builder and remodeler members of the association. The forum topics are applicable to anyone who builds homes for Texans.

The opinions shared by the forum presenters are not endorsed by nor may they necessarily reflect the views of the general membership of the Texas Association of Builders. The discussion, however, will provide attendees with revolutionary ideas that should stimulate impassioned discussions and shake even the most jaded building professional from complacency.
  • "The Faces and Places of Texas: The Next 10 Years" Dr. Lloyd Potter, Texas State Demographer
  • "Urban Growth Trends: What does it look like in Austin?" Eldon Rude, Volunteer Chairman, Programs, Urban Land Institute; Principle, 360° Real Estate Analytics
  • "Reshaping Our Cities Using 'Form-Based' Zoning" Lee Einsweiler, Board Member, Congress for the New Urbanism Central Texas Chapter; Principal, Code Studio
  • "Building Single Family Homes in High Density Areas: The Builder's Perspective" Mike Dishberger, CEO and Co-Owner, Sandcastle Homes, Inc.
