Hutchison's decision to stay put scrambles other Texas politicians' plans

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's announcement that she's staying in the U.S. Senate scrambles the playing field for more than a half-dozen Texas politicians who had been angling to replace her. Some, including former Secretary of State Roger Williams and Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones, immediately charged ahead with plans to run in 2012, when Hutchison's seat is next on the ballot. The U.S. Senate race for 2012 officially began Wednesday. Shortly after Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison announced that she will finish her term rather than resign, several Texans who would have run in a special election for the post said they're ramping up campaigns for when Texas' senior senator's six-year term expires. That's providing, of course, that Hutchison relinquishes the seat in 2012 as most analysts expect. More

Gas company files suit over proposed pipe

The company that owns a natural gas pipeline that exploded last year and injured three members of a Bushland family is suing some nearby landowners as it seeks to relocate the line around a populated neighborhood. Houston-based El Paso Natural Gas filed a condemnation lawsuit March 25, seeking right of way to bury a new 2.3-mile, 24-inch natural gas pipeline around the development near where a Nov. 5 rupture occurred. Texas environmental regulators blinked this week in a standoff with federal officials over clean-air rules, including state provisions that could allow industrial polluters to avoid some Clean Air Act requirements. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the federal Environmental Protection Agency have skirmished since summer over a series of issues, and officials on both sides said this week's actions indicate that they are working to overcome their differences. Drug violence in northern Mexico has reached a level much worse than that which wracked Colombia two decades ago, and it's affecting Texans on a daily basis, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said. Likening Mexican drug cartels to Islamic terrorist groups and the Italian Mafia, the state's top homeland security official told lawmakers that he expects the situation along the border to deteriorate before it improves.
