Mortgage interest deduction softens blow as 'tax day' approaches

With the April 17 tax-filing deadline right around the corner, the most important tax deduction for tens of millions of middle class families could be on the chopping block as early as next year's tax season if some policymakers get their way. North Texas experienced continued improvement in new home sales, new home closings, and new home starts in the first quarter of 2012 according to statistics from Dallas-based Residential Strategies Inc. This makes three consecutive quarters that market conditions have trended positive. A&M engages firm for Kyle Field renovation

According to a press release from the athletic department, Texas A&M and the 12th Man Foundation have approached sports facility development firm Populous to design the renovation and potential reconstruction of Kyle Field. The release comes on the heels of a March 27 announcement that Kyle Field season tickets sold out at the earliest point in the University's history. University and athletic department officials speculated that the sales are a direct result of A&M's highly anticipated move to the Southeastern Conference. More

Sales of existing homes up 13 percent in North Texas

Sales of existing single-family homes in North Texas continued to trend upward in March, improving 13 percent from a year ago, as Dallas-Fort Worth home builders also reported improved first-quarter housing starts, according to separate reports. In the 29-county North Texas region, 6,126 homes were sold in March. The median sales price was $155,000, which took an 11 percent jump from March 2011, according to the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. More

The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) and four of its member organizations announced a federal housing discrimination complaint against Wells Fargo & Co. and Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. This complaint, which was filed with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is the result of an undercover investigation of Wells Fargo's bank-owned properties that found foreclosed properties in White areas are much better maintained and marketed by Wells Fargo than such properties in African-American and Latino neighborhoods. Texas registered another month of strong sales tax collections in March with revenue increasing to $1.87 billion, a 16.9 percent jump over the same month last year. For the year, the state is now almost 13 percent — or $1.5 billion — ahead of last year's sales tax collections at this time. The sales tax is the state's most important source of revenue and pays for basic public functions such as schools and prisons. More

Data in the March Housing Scorecard show some promising signs of stability, though the overall outlook remains mixed. Mortgage delinquencies continued a downward trend and were substantially below year ago levels, while sales of existing homes in January and February marked the strongest start to a year since 2007. Former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz raised $1.31 million in the first three months of 2012 in his bid to be the next U.S. Senator from Texas, his campaign has announced. Congressional candidates are required to submit campaign finance reports for the first quarter of the year. Lt. Gov. Government lawyer: Oil rig owner hindering federal probe

The owner of the oil rig that exploded and led to the massive 2010 Gulf oil spill is thwarting a federal board's efforts to make safety recommendations that could prevent such an accident from happening again by not honoring the organization's subpoenas, a government lawyer told a judge recently. But an attorney for rig owner Transocean said the U.S. Chemical Safety Board does not have the authority to investigate an incident that happened in Gulf of Mexico waters on the Outer Continental Shelf.
