Existing home sales soar in April

Existing home sales soared in April as home buyers scrambled to claim the tax credit that expired at the end of the month, according to a recent real estate industry report. The National Association of Realtors reported that existing home sales jumped 7.6 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.77 million units, up from the upwardly revised rate of 5.36 million in March. Sales year-over-year were up 22.8 percent. More

More than two-thirds of Texans say their confidence in the state's public schools ranges from shaky to nonexistent, according to the new University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll. About a quarter of the respondents express "complete" or "a great deal" of confidence in the public schools. Almost a third say they have "hardly any" or "very little" confidence. The other 42 percent say they have "only some confidence" in the primary system for educating the state's children. More

The Alaska spill leaked nearly 11 million gallons of crude, killed countless wildlife and tarnished the owner of the damaged tanker, Exxon. More than half of likely Texas voters like the idea of expanding casino gambling to help reduce the state's budget deficit, according to a telephone poll. Rasmussen Reports asked 500 likely Texas voters were asked about ways to address the budget deficit on May 13. The results: 57 percent favor legalizing casino gambling, 33 percent oppose it. The remaining 10 percent answered "not sure." More

Texas is caught in a highway paint shortage that could mean fading lines under the summer heat. Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Chris Lippincott says the agency has suspended redrawing the stripes on existing roads due to the shortage of a resin-like material called methyl methacrylate. Manufacturers have notified Texas about production and demand delays. More
