Dewhurst-Cruz Senate battle rages on in runoff
The Associated Press via The Brownsville Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Republican primary battle for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas has already been nasty and expensive — and it's just getting started. Establishment GOP favorite and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst beat tea party darling and former state solicitor general Ted Cruz by 10 percentage points Tuesday, but fell well short of breaking the 50 percent margin of votes cast needed to avoid a runoff. The pair emerged from a nine-candidate Republican field and will square off in a second round of voting July 31. More

There is no Democratic candidate in the November general election, so Ashby will take the seat in January. More

Straus loses lieutenants, and Senate sees a shift
The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Election Day was costly for House Speaker Joe Straus. Three of his lieutenants were defeated. Another was forced into a Republican runoff on July 31. But it wasn't without some wins, and it certainly could have been worse: Two of the seven incumbents swept out by voters were with Straus' opponents in the last speaker's race, as was one of the three incumbents forced into runoff elections. GOP, Democratic voters act on numerous referendums
Amarillo Globe-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Below the high-profile state and local races, Texas primary voters in both major parties found a sprinkling of referendums on their ballots. Democratic and Republican officials approve the measures and send them to voters during primaries to gauge public opinion. Party officials use the results, which are not binding, for largely educational and promotional purposes, party spokespeople said. More

Keystone readies SE Texas linkage
Beaumont Enterprise    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A crude oil pipeline that will run 485 miles from Cushing, Okla., to Southeast Texas should be under construction by late summer and operational in late 2013. TransCanada, the builder of the Keystone Pipeline, is looking for workers, vendors and suppliers to help support the $2.3 billion project. TransCanada conducted a registration workshop in Beaumont, similar to others it has sponsored in other areas along the route. "We'll need supplies, goods and services," TransCanada spokesman Jim Prescott said, listing fuel, tires, oil and welding sticks. More

Republicans prevail in Texas primary
The Associated Press via Theeagle.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two groups will continue to dominate Texas politics next year: The conservatives and the more conservatives. Little more than 10 percent of the electorate voted in the Republican primary, and those who did sent a clear signal they expect Texas to remain on the rightward course set 34 years ago when Bill Clements became the first Republican governor in 100 years. Exxon CEO Tillerson concerned by 'energy illiteracy'
Dallas Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
He doesn't mean it in a derogatory way, but Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO Rex Tillerson explains public concerns about hydraulic fracturing and the "poorly thought-out energy policies" in the United States with one phrase: "Energy illiteracy." His statement was a response to questions about Exxon's efforts to educate the public about the connection between society's overwhelming consumption of energy and the sources of fuel to generate electricity, such as the hydraulic fracturing method of obtaining natural gas. Experts: Redistricting fuels primary results
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Political experts said not to look for an overriding theme to Tuesday's legislative primary results in which moderate Republicans lost to conservatives while others managed to beat back strong conservative efforts. It was, they said, simply the first election after redistricting drew new political boundaries, conditions that always trigger some turbulence. More

Texas town wants lower property values
Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's a win-lose proposal for Hico, but City Council members say it's the right thing to do. Council members will discuss whether the city should challenge the Hamilton County Appraisal District over its property appraisals. City officials contend that appraisals in Hico are too high, up $800,000 from the year before. Higher property values typically mean more money for a city's coffers, but Hico officials say the appraisals don't reflect the real estate market and are squeezing homeowners in the city of about 1,400 some 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Holiday, moved primary date hurt voter turnout
Beaumont Enterprise    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Awkward timing of Tuesday's primaries is to blame for a disappointing voter turnout, according to area election officials. "I guess they were out fishing," said Newton County clerk Mary Cobb. Although election officials in certain areas expected a larger turnout because of a presidential primary, hotly contested races and new districts, they said having the election fall after the Memorial Day holiday hurt voter turnout. Analyst: Anti-incumbent mood likely doomed 2 DFW lawmakers
Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two area Republican lawmakers sent to the political sidelines by voters were likely the victim of an anti-incumbent environment that continues to prevail over legislative and congressional races, a political analyst said. State Rep. Vicki Truitt, R-Keller, was denied an eighth term and Rep. Barbara Nash, R-Arlington, a second term by relative newcomers. More
