Texas leads nation in new home construction

Talk about raising the roof. According to the latest Census data, Texas gets credit for 20 percent of the increase in new homes built in the United States between April 1, 2010, and July 1, 2011. Nationally, the number of new homes built during that period increased by 607,000. Texas accounted for 121,000 of those. That's three times as many as California, which came in second in the number of new homes built. More

Builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes gained one point in June from a slightly revised level in the previous month to rest at 29 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). This is the highest level the index has attained since May of 2007. More

Texas Masonry Council: Pearsall to require masonry in new construction

The fast-growing South Texas city of Pearsall has decided to join a growing state trend and require minimum percentages of masonry for new construction, reports the Texas Masonry Council. Citing concerns about the city's appearance and the long-term sustainability of the tax base, the City Council on June 12, 2012 voted unanimously to require minimum percentages of masonry for all new residential, multi-family, commercial and industrial buildings. Pulte repairing problems in homes

Repairs are complete or in the works for about a dozen homes in the Schertz neighborhood of Fairhaven, where homeowners have complained about issues such as cracked foundations. Although many homeowners remain at odds with builder Pulte Homes, others have agreed to let the builder repair homes. John Smithee, chairman of the House Insurance Committee, sent a letter to Texas Insurance Commissioner Eleanor Kitzman about the precarious position of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, a quasi-governmental organization that acts as the property insurer of last resort for individuals and businesses unable to obtain coverage on the private market. A "number of circumstances occurring over the past 18 months have resulted in a current financial condition of TWIA that is much worse than any of us had anticipated," Smithee, R-Amarillo, wrote in his letter. Housing starts fell in May, although permits to build new homes bumped up to the highest level in more than three years, providing mixed signals about the viability of the U.S. housing market, Reuters reports. Groundbreaking on new homes dropped 4.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 708,000 units, the Commerce Department said. That reading, often prone to significant revisions, was below the 720,000-unit median forecast in a Reuters poll. More

Train derailment near Cisco sends hazardous materials into creek

Approximately 180,000 pounds of methanol and an unknown amount of various other hazardous materials is believed to have spilled into a creek near Cisco after 24 rail cars derailed, according to a spokeswoman for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Amarillo has spent more than $57,415 thus far this fiscal year to mow overgrown properties in the city limits, a city official said. Late last month, highway and public safety workers set up barricades along Interstate 37 between Corpus Christi and San Antonio. Their objective: Reverse the flow of southbound lanes to provide a hypothetical escape route for thousands of people fleeing a fictional hurricane.
