The Brownsville Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cameron County Judge Carlos H. Cascos has issued a mandatory evacuation of all high profile vehicles at county parks on South Padre Island as Tropical Storm Alex continues to churn in the Gulf of Mexico moving closer to the South Texas-Mexico border. The judge issued the order late Monday after the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center indicated Alex was on track to affect the Gulf Coast region. More

Official: Even glancing blow from Alex could wreak oil havoc
The Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As Tropical Storm Alex drew a possible bead on Texas' southern coast, the director of the National Hurricane Center said Monday that a smaller hurricane that skirts the southern edge of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill could pose more danger than one that strikes the spill area head-on. Though Alex is not expected to track through the portion of the Gulf affected by the spill, the storm still has the potential to hamper containment efforts, Bill Read told risk management officials meeting Monday in Austin. The Texas Home Builders Workers' Comp Group announced a $122,694 dividend to policy holders bringing total dividends paid to the group to $287,461. The THB-WC group, formed in September 2005 exclusively for home builders in Texas, provides qualifying members with a competitive option for workers' compensation coverage. The announcement marks the third dividend payment and a 15 percent increase over last year's dividend payment for the group by Texas Mutual Insurance Company, the program underwriter. More

Green Retailing: Get up on green roofs
Building-Products.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A green roof is exactly what it sounds like-plants growing on the roof. The idea is old, but current approaches are based on the latest systems thinking. A good green roof system takes in the entire building ecology and watershed. Storm runoff is managed; perhaps rainwater is harvested and reused within the building. The plants effectively filter rainwater, provide habitat, and maybe even food for inhabitants. More

White says he would appoint judges from both parties
The Austin American-Statesman Postcards Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Just outside the arena where some of the most strident Democrats in Texas gathered for their state convention, Bill White, the party's nominee for governor, said he would appoint Democratic and Republican judges if he beats Gov. Rick Perry this fall. "I will be the first governor in the state of Texas to really make these appointments on a bipartisan basis," White said in an interview with the American-Statesman. More

GOP ties bind Green Party candidates in Texas case
The Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Even if allegations about an illegal petition drive are true, knocking Green Party candidates off the November general election ballot before they can be proven imposes "a death penalty," lawyers for the party argued in a written appeal to the Texas Supreme Court. The party has until Friday to certify its candidates for the fall election, but a judge last Friday ordered it not to proceed because of an "unauthorized illegal contribution" by a corporation with Republican links. Governor Rick Perry and Jan Brewer sound off
The State Column    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texas Governor Rick Perry and Arizona Governor Jan Brewer criticized the Obama administration’s border plan on Monday, saying it did not do enough to quell border violence. Federal officials told Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard Monday that Arizona can expect to see the vast majority if National Guard troops deployed to the border. Arizona will get 524 troops, Texas 250, California 224 and New Mexico 72, officials said. More

Libertarian Katherine Glass campaigns for governor
The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The easy part for Katherine Youngblood Glass was securing the gubernatorial nomination of the Libertarian Party of Texas, which she did by a 3-to-1 margin over the party’s 2002 choice, Jeff Daiell, on June 13 in Austin. Still, she's ready to do battle, and she'll get her first shot at Democrat Bill White on July 5, at the candidate forum of the Kerrville League of Women Voters. Gov. Rick Perry won't be there — he has refused to debate unless White releases more of his tax returns — but Texans thirsting for right-leaning rhetoric on states' rights, gun control and secure borders won't be disappointed by Glass.
