Analysis: Campaign money as a show of political health
The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It is somewhat crass to talk about money when you are supposed to be talking about good old American democracy, but the list of statewide campaigns that have succeeded without cash is short. It costs money to introduce candidates to voters, explain their views and point out the personality and ideological flaws that opponents forgot to mention. More

Contracts to buy US homes up sharply in May
The Associated Press via Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes shot up in May. But the pace of buying this year remains slower than in 2013, in part because of sluggish sales during winter. The National Association of Realtors said that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose 6.1 percent to 103.9 last month. It was the sharpest month-over-month gain since April 2010. The index remains 5.2 percent below its level a year ago. More

Now she is battling to revive a seemingly stalled campaign to become the first Democratic Texas governor in more than 20 years by winning over frustrated Republicans and motivating enough voters who would otherwise spend election day at home to find a few minutes to vote. Texas gears up to handle growth demands of Toyota
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While California officials continue to lick their wounds, Texas is looking forward to the gradual move of Toyota’s North American headquarters from Torrance, Calif., to the Dallas-Ft. Worth area over the next few years. And while Texas does face some general challenges in assimilating its recent and continuing population surge — due to a persistent drought there, among other things — economic-development experts foresee little difficulty for the robust economy of the Lone Star State in digesting Toyota's move, the people who will come with it, and the development demands of housing and schooling the families of the 4,000 white-collar employees Toyota eventually is expected to employ there.
