Injured, dead workers are casualties of the 'Texas miracle'
The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The statistics tell a compelling story about the workers who are building the "Texas miracle" economy: Hundreds of thousands of them have no occupational insurance coverage. Just as many have stripped-down plans and limited legal rights. And people who try to claim benefits in the bewildering workers' compensation bureaucracy often face denials, disputes they can’t win and a government that does little to protect them. More

Recent rains improve Texas drought, lake levels
The Associated Press via Lubbock Avalanche-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plentiful rainfall this past week improved conditions across Texas, although 69 percent of the state remained in some drought stage, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor map. Texas is in better shape drought-wise when compared to 2011, the state's driest year ever. More

3 reasons all is not lost in housing
HousingWire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When mortgage rates jumped in anticipation of the start of Fed tapering back in June 2013, the inherent cracks in the foundation of the housing industry became apparent. Seriously, how healthy is a housing market that relies on artificially capped interest rates and literally tens of billions of dollars a month of fiat money pumped into Treasurys and bonds? More

Proposals to prevent another fertilizer explosion immediately meet resistance
StateImpact Texas    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The explosion at a fertilizer plant in the small town of West, Texas last year took much more than fifteen lives. At least 262 people were injured; twenty percent of those were brain injuries. Homes and schools were destroyed. But judging from the response of some state lawmakers charged with stopping it from happening again, preventable disasters like the one in West are just something Texans are going to have to live with from time to time. Harvard study: Housing costs squeeze Austin renters, homeowners
Austin Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies released its annual "State of the Nation's Housing" report and some of the findings are quite sobering, particularly the number of households that are burdened by monthly housing costs. Austin's numbers are nothing to write home about, but there are far worse markets, even in Texas, in terms of how much household income is earmarked for housing. More

The coming Texas housing affordability squeeze
World Property Channel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to Metrostudy's first quarter 2014 survey of the Texas Housing market, first time and lower income buyers are getting priced out of the market. Texas right now is home to the strongest housing markets in the entire country. Texas was on a different cycle long before the boom and the bust came along. Driven by past swings in oil prices, the state was already on a rapid-growth trajectory before the rest of the country went on its early-2000s building binge. Said colloquially, when Phoenix and Las Vegas caught pneumonia, Houston sneezed and kept on going, right to the top of the national market list. More

Re-explosion of US house prices is over
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Call off the bubble alert. Through 2012 and 2013, U.S. house prices were rising at a pace that was as extreme as anything seen during the disastrous housing bubble of the last decade. But since the start of 2014, the pace of increase has slowed markedly. Assuming the slower pace sticks — and it looks as if it will—prices will remain affordable, if not exactly cheap. More

Here's 5 challenges to Texas water that might surprise you
StateImpact Texas    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With nearly 70 percent of the state still stuck in a drought that has dragged on for years, there's been plenty of talk about how to strengthen water supplies in Texas. A multi-billion-dollar water fund (the passage of Proposition 6 last election) is in the works that will help fund projects like reservoirs, desalination and conservation. And there's ongoing discussion and debate about the elephant in the aquifer: ways to change how groundwater is regulated, which took up a whole day of testimony at the state legislature this week. But that's not all. More
