Austin News KXAN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Austin could become one of the only cities in the nation to require rest breaks for construction workers if the City Council passes the ordinance. In Austin's hot summers, construction workers often work long hours in temperatures that near or exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The Workers Defense Project said one construction worker died last summer of heat-related causes on a job site after working for three consecutive days in extreme temperatures. More

100 days later, BP taps new CEO, seeks fresh start
The Associated Press via The Amarillo Globe-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One hundred days after the rig explosion that set off the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history, the oil giant behind it is hoping to move beyond the losses, the gaffes and the live video that ran for weeks of the busted well coughing up massive amounts of crude every second. BP is replacing CEO Tony Hayward with Managing Director Robert Dudley, selling $30 billion in assets and setting aside $32.2 billion to cover the long-term cost of the spill. It's also claiming a $9.88 billion tax credit in the second quarter based on the $32.2 billion charge. More

Austin's budget rosier than expected
The Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The City of Austin would hire 88 more police officers, firefighters and paramedics under the 2010-11 budget that officials have proposed. Programs that were in danger of being axed, such as library hours, a police cadet class, free playground programs and the Trail of Lights, would be spared because of higher-than-predicted sales tax revenues. Stroud: Hutchison crossover support boosts White
The San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
George Block calls himself "seriously independent," says he's utterly disillusioned with President Barack Obama and recently shifted his allegiance in the governor's race from Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to former Houston Mayor Bill White. He did so, he said, out of animus for Gov. Rick Perry, the incumbent and White's Republican opponent in the November general election. More

Border sheriffs split on governor's race
The San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White cut sharply into Gov. Rick Perry's endorsements from border sheriffs, but stumbled by claiming support from two who are backing the incumbent. Perry has enjoyed broad support since 2005 from the 18 members of the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition, in part because he has steered millions of dollars in state and federal funding to the coalition and their individual departments. Dallas-area home prices are continuing the modest increases that began last fall. Dallas had a 2.9 percent rise in prices in May from a year earlier in the latest Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller Home Price Index report. While it was a solid increase, the local gain is less than the national 4.6 percent average price rise recorded in the cities Case-Shiller tracks. More

Fed: US economic recovery has slowed; region sees moderate growth
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Federal Reserve said U.S. economic growth slowed in some areas over the past two months, dragged down by commercial real estate and the expiration of a tax credit for home buyers. In the Fed's Dallas District, which covers Texas, northern Louisiana and southern New Mexico, the economy "expanded at a moderate pace over the past six weeks, although business outlooks were slightly more cautious." The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The College Board's report about the U.S. falling to 12th in worldwide graduation rates has tremendous relevance here in Texas. As it turns out, not only is the U.S. lagging, but Texas ranks 40th among the 50 states plus the District of Columbia in the number of 25- to 34-year-olds who hold an associate degree or higher. Other energy issues seep into spill legislation
The Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Energy legislation advancing in the Senate would force companies to reveal closely held details about the chemical cocktails they use to extract natural gas from shale rock, imposing the first federal regulation on hydraulic fracturing. The disclosure provision is buried in a 409-page bill that has been cast as a response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster — but which also is home to dozens of unrelated proposals on everything from energy efficiency to electric cars.
