Why Austin is unaffordable: major obstacles to building
Austin American-Statesman
Headline stories and political polls all validate the obvious — Austin is expensive. Much of the affordability problem is associated with housing. After all, housing costs are the largest single budget item for all but the most elite. Not that long ago, Austin was one of the most affordable communities in the country. Today, it is the most expensive major city in Texas.

In bank debate, high stakes for Texas businesses and GOP
The Texas Tribune
A once-obscure federal agency has landed at the center of a national debate over business and free-market ideology, with potentially enduring ramifications for both the Texas companies it supports and the Texas Republicans it is dividing. The Export-Import Bank, which helps American businesses export products, has been regularly reauthorized by Congress since its founding in 1934, but conservative leaders in the House are seeking to let its charter expire Sept. 30, with Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Dallas, chairman of the Financial Services Committee, leading the charge.

ZipRealty: Austin houses sell faster than anywhere in the country
Austin Business Journal
Homes are selling faster in Austin than anywhere in the country at the moment. That's the conclusion of California-based ZipRealty Inc., an online real estate brokerage and research company. The survey, which crunched numbers from the Multiple Listing Service, indicates that half of all Austin houses on the market are selling in 10 days or less. The median number of days a house is on the market is different from the average days on the market, which is the matrix commonly cited by the Austin Board of Realtors. In ABOR's most recent report, Austin single family houses are selling on average in 39 days.

Denton fracking ban could spur wider legal clash
The Texas Tribune
Debbie Ingram understands the importance of Texas' oil and gas industry, and she enjoys the look of a lit-up drilling rig rising in the nighttime sky. But a few months of living about 400 feet from a natural gas well — the source of a cacophony of noises and nauseating fumes that, at times, have overtaken her brick house — prompted her to join hundreds of others pushing back against the industry in this North Texas city.

The Texas Tribune
Lawmakers at a U.S. House Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation meeting said they support legislation that aims to resolve a land dispute between the federal government and Texas landowners. Texas could lose billions in road funds
KTRH -TV
As the new fiscal year looms, Texas faces a highway calamity if the U.S. Senate continues their do-nothing ways. The Federal Highway Trust Fund could be insolvent as soon as August. The fund is created from the nationwide gas tax of 18 cents a gallon. That flat tax has not been increased in 20 years. Meanwhile, the price of gas has tripled and number of registered vehicles in the U.S. has increased 25 percent.

Flooding controversy going down as million-dollar homes go up
KHOU-TV
As million-dollar homes go up in one Spring Branch neighborhood, there's a flooding controversy going down — literally. It doesn't take an engineer to see where all the storm water will go straight downhill. But City of Houston engineers gave their go-ahead for the project anyway. And the question is why.

Time running out for Congress to address border immigration crisis
The Texas Tribune
Time is running out for Congress to address the continued influx of undocumented immigrants along the Texas border before members adjourn for an August recess. Only hours remain before lawmakers leave Washington until after Labor Day, and they have yet to agree on a spending bill that would keep border security operations funded into the fall and provide government agencies more help to deal with the crush of immigrants from Central America. While at least two proposals remain on the table for consideration, neither seems close to passage amid partisan bickering over how to address immigration and border security.

North Texas home remodels rise along with hot housing market
WFAA-TV
The remodeling business in North Texas is going "through the roof" says Sandy Tabacinic, owner of Homecorp. "It's absolutely insane. It is the highest amount of projects I have had in years," she said. "In the nine years I have been doing this, never this much." Some homeowners are opting for a do-over to modernize their places so they can sell them for more money. Others would like a new house but inventory of homes for sale has been too low, according to Tabacinic.

Home builders venture Into urban areas
The Wall Street Journal
Ten years ago, it was rare for a national home builder to venture into the condo and apartment market or to build in or near big cities, preferring to construct single-family homes for middle-class families in suburbia. But as demand increases for luxury condos in or near urban areas, national home builders are chasing those affluent buyers and their dollars.

Can the 'granny flat' make a comeback?
Next City
