Housing market is out of the basement
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
San Antonio is the fourth-busiest home building market in the country, with the rising prices to prove it. It's no return to the good old days of six years ago, when mortgage lending was easy and home building boomed. But the market bottom is clearly visible in the rearview mirror, according to the housing research firm Metrostudy. More

The Associated Press via Construction Equipment Guide    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. builders slowed their pace of housing construction slightly in July. But in a hopeful sign for future construction, applications for building permits rose to their highest level since August 2008. The Commerce Department says construction of single-family homes and apartments dipped 1.1 percent in July compared with June, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 746,000. In June, the pace had been the fastest since October 2008. More

Perry's fundraising fuels re-election speculation
Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gov. Rick Perry has quietly replenished his depleted campaign war chest since he abandoned his presidential bid in January, fueling speculation that the longest-serving governor in Texas history will seek another term in 2014. Perry raised $1.9 million from the start of the year through June — persuading donors to keep writing big checks even after a series of gaffes during his White House run left his political future looking murky. State budget picture not as rosy as it may seem
The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The state's economy is booming, relatively speaking. Tax revenue is far higher than the comptroller had predicted. The Rainy Day Fund has so much money that it might hit a cap. Hardly anybody even knew that particular savings account had a limit, and why would they — why would the state ever hoard $9 billion or $10 billion? But the state's financial outlook isn't as rosy as it appears to be, particularly if state lawmakers want things to run the way they run now. More

Editorial: Pathways to success are goal of revamp for Texas schools
Longview News-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texas Workforce Commissioner Tom Pauken is planting seeds for what he hopes will grow into a movement to broaden educational offerings available to Texas public school students and better prepare future workers for job openings. The problem with Texas schools, Pauken says, is that real learning has been replaced by test learning. The heavy emphasis on standardized testing and the push to make high school students "college-ready" has created a broken system, he says. More

Decades after oil bust, Midland-Odessa booming again
Abilene Reporter-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nearly three decades ago, Texas Monthly ran a post mortem on the Texas oil industry with headline reading "So long, it was fun while it lasted," and a forlorn James Dean figure hitchhiking out of town. Back then, few would have questioned such a dire assessment, as the mother of all busts was destroying the West Texas banking industry, making oil barons into car salesmen, and turning parts of Midland and Odessa into junkyards of rusting equipment. State transportation commissioners: We're committed to the Harbor Bridge
Corpus Christi Caller-Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
State transportation commissioners affirmed a commitment to the Harbor Bridge replacement project, saying it has statewide significance, even as nagging funding questions remain. The bridge is not on the commission's agenda for its meeting in Corpus Christi, but it drove the conversation at an informal gathering with state and local officials, and not just because it loomed in the background at the harborside event.
