Houston home prices buck national trend
Houston Business Journal    Share   Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Home prices across the country were flat in July but not in the Greater Houston area, where the value of a house continued to rise. Home prices in Houston were up 3.3 percent in July compared with the year before, according to the latest report released from CoreLogic. When distressed transactions are removed from the equation, home prices are still down in Houston, Sugar Land and Baytown, but at a reduced rate of 1.6 percent. The numbers were better than the rest of Texas, which as a whole had a mere 0.1 percent increase in home values in July. More

NRG to buy green electric retailer Green Mountain
fuelfix    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The owner of Houston-based electric retailer Reliant Energy will buy renewables giant Green Mountain Energy for $350 million cash. NRG Energy, Reliant's parent company and one of the largest power plant operators in the country, said Green Mountain will be run as a standalone business within NRG and maintain the same branding. Reliant, the second largest electric retailer in Texas, also offers renewable power plans to customers but it's not clear if the acquisition would have any impact on that company's offerings. More

State, federal agencies nearing agreement on voluntary air permitting program
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After months of negotiations and much finger-pointing, federal and state officials appear close to resolving a dispute on a major part of Texas' air pollution permitting program. In a meeting scheduled for this afternoon at the North Austin headquarters of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the two sides will present a draft compromise that carves out a way for refineries and large manufacturing facilities to voluntarily give up broad permits issued to them by the state for potentially more stringent permits acceptable to federal authorities. Perry airs first negative ads against White
Associated Press via El Paso Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Republican Gov. Rick Perry launched his first negative TV ads against Bill White on Wednesday, claiming his Democratic opponent profited from Hurricane Rita and linking him to President Barack Obama. The Perry campaign began running the spots quietly, without posting them online or announcing any new ads. They are running multiple times in Houston, Austin, Dallas and San Antonio, according to a campaign official familiar with the ad purchase who would speak only on the condition of anonymity. More

Still no sign of a Perry-White debate
Austin American-Statesman First Reading Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The debate deadline imposed by Gov. Rick Perry came and went Wednesday, Bill White released no further tax returns and Rick Perry agreed to no debates. As for the newspapers' offer for an Oct. 19 debate, organizers still hold out some hope that Perry will agree. If White is the only person who shows up and the newspapers go through with an hour-long interview of him, it's increasingly unlikely that it would be broadcast on television. More

White hoping 'Big D' stands for Democrats on Election Day
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In Patchwork Nation parlance, Dallas County is a "Boom Town," characterized by fast-growing communities with rapidly diversifying populations. It is that, of course, but with a population of nearly 2.5 million and a complex and yeasty mix of cities, towns and neighborhoods, the county can't be so easily categorized. More

Government gives notice on abandoned platforms
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Obama administration has launched plans to clean up "idle iron" in the Gulf of Mexico, requiring companies to dismantle deserted platforms and permanently plug thousands of abandoned oil and gas wells — including some that are decades old. The mandate will affect nearly 3,500 nonproducing wells and require the decommissioning of about 650 unused oil and gas production platforms. More

Power over privacy
Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the closing days of his last term in the Texas House, former state Rep. Bill Zedler, R-Arlington, used his legislative authority to obtain a series of confidential records from the Texas Medical Board, The Texas Tribune has learned. His reason? To defend doctors he believes were wrongly the subjects of misconduct investigations by the board, which licenses the state's physicians. "I intervened on their behalf because you have attempts by the medical board to sanction somebody when there's clearly no explanation [of] why," says Zedler, who's running to reclaim his House District 96 seat this November.
