Perry looks to enhance national profile
Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gov. Rick Perry, apparently emboldened by signs that he's cruising to another re-election in Texas, is sketching out ambitious plans to boost his profile nationally before the next presidential race. In an interview, Perry for the first time acknowledged having examined his presidential prospects, but said he won't run for the White House under any circumstances. Instead, he said, he's preparing to rally a coalition of governors "who share our fiscal conservative philosophy" to "push back" against the federal government. More

Rick Perry and Democratic challenger Bill White, the state's largest newspapers today will invite two minor-party candidates to a planned debate next month. In an effort to produce some form of a debate, the media organizations, including the American-Statesman, today will issue renewed invitations to Perry and White and will invite Libertarian Kathie Glass and Green Party candidate Deb Shafto. Glass and Shafto will be allowed to participate regardless of whether Perry and White accept. More

Perry stuns editorial writers
Houston Chronicle Texas Politics Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Conference of Editorial Writers was "stunned and disappointed" when Gov. Rick Perry spoke to the group, didn't take questions, but then shook hands with people and gave an interview before "TV cameras in the hallway," NCEW President Tom Waseleski said in a letter to Perry. Some were stunned that Perry spoke to the group at all, since he's decided against meeting with newspaper editorial writers this election. More

Austin water utility modifies tunnel plans
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Austin water utility officials have decided not to use a small property in a northwest Austin neighborhood to excavate a large tunnel for a planned water treatment plant, partially satisfying residents who said the work would disrupt their neighborhood and threaten local creeks. "My take is that, if the city is going to do this project, this [change] is at least better than what they had been planning," said Eric Deal, president of the Mountain Neighborhood Association. Remedy for foreclosures has economists divided
NPR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite the government's efforts to help the housing market, economists estimate that about 1 in 4 households with a mortgage owe more than their house is worth. Foreclosures continue to rack up — they hit a record high last month. And home construction remains near a 50-year low. Some analysts say the government has done too much already and that the market should be left alone. Others think the government should take bolder action. More

Southwest-AirTran deal means more options for some travelers
Associated Press via Lubbock Avalanche-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Southwest's decision to buy AirTran will mean more routes and fewer delays and cancellations in small cities but higher fares in the Northeast and perhaps the end of the super-low sale fare. Southwest Airlines, which has built a loyal following with its tongue-in-cheek ads and refusal to charge for checked bags, said Monday it planned to buy AirTran for $1.4 billion. More
