New HUD chief Castro is ready to start pushing homeownership
The Dallas Morning News
Like previous housing secretaries, Julián Castro wants to make it easier for more Americans to buy homes. But with credit still tight after the financial meltdown of a few years ago, he prefers to avoid setting any specific target. The markets learned tough lessons when the housing bubble burst six years ago about loose credit and an overemphasis on turning renters into buyers. But with homeownership in retreat to levels not seen since 1995, Castro, after a couple of months on the job, says the pendulum has swung too far.

Analysis: A simple and very expensive proposal
The Texas Tribune
In a campaign commercial, Attorney General Greg Abbott rolls down a freeway ramp next to a stalled line of cars, ready with a self-deprecating wisecrack: "A guy in a wheelchair can move faster than traffic on some roads in Texas." Abbott, the Republican candidate for governor, proposes to spend billions more for roads "without raising taxes, fees or tolls" — paying for it by "insuring money dedicated for roads will be spent only on roads, and no more taking highway funds by the Legislature to pay for their pet projects."

Top economists: Higher home prices and rising interest rates could hassle Texas homebuyers
The Dallas Morning New
High job growth and population gains should keep demand strong for Texas housing. But rising home prices and the potential for rising interest rates could make it harder for homebuyers to afford putting a roof over their heads, two of the country's top housing economists said.

Frivolous spending and cover-ups alleged in Texas gubernatorial race
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
The gubernatorial slugfest continued, as Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott accused his Democratic opponent of a history of "lavish spending" with her campaign money. Fort Worth Democrat Wendy Davis, currently in the midst of her "Expose Greg Abbott's Cover Up" tour, has defended her campaign spending in the past and fired back that the state's top lawyer abused his power and tried to hide problems in the Texas Enterprise Fund.

In AG race, contentious issues but little debate
The Texas Tribune
Some of the most contentious issues that have surfaced in statewide campaigns this year — if Texas is required to disclose the locations of hazardous chemical warehouses, or if sweeping cuts lawmakers made to public education should be defended in court — will fall to the next attorney general. But it's not the candidates for attorney general who've been debating them.

Construction technology: The cloud and beyond
By Nate Budde
We use technology to improve or simplify our lives and jobs every day — no matter what job you have or what industry you are in. Despite the fact that everybody uses technology in some way, some industries lag far behind the curve in the adoption of certain technologies. It's odd, but many construction industry participants have not yet realized how much simpler, easier, cleaner and more efficient the proper use of new technology could make their outdated and inefficient current process, even though they are currently using technology in some way anyway.

Falling gas prices could hurt Texas economy
KLTV-TV
Gas prices are falling, but that might spell trouble for the Texas economy. The state average for gas is $3.08 per gallon of regular unleaded gas, but in East Texas, gas is even cheaper. A gallon of gas at most stations in Tyler or Longview will run you less than $3: the last time prices were that low was nearly a year ago. Customers at the pump say they are already feeling the benefits in their wallets.

Home builders offer goodies as sales slow
Bloomberg Businessweek
Builders in volatile housing markets such as Phoenix, Sacramento, Las Vegas and Orlando are sweetening offers as sales slow. Large price increases in 2013, driven by investors purchasing homes to rent out, discouraged buyers.
