Top homebuilding economist David Crowe looked pretty relaxed during his visit to North Texas on Friday. Crowe, who was in Grapevine to speak to Texas homebuilders at the Texas Association of Builders Sunbelt Builders Show, was in what's definitely the strongest housing market in the country. "I don't think I'll get any tomatoes thrown at me today," said Crowe, chief economist with the National Association of Home Builders. "Be thankful you are in Texas and not in Michigan or southern Florida." More

Candidates for governor debate tonight, minus the actual governor
Austin American-Statesman First Reading Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It’s fight night here in Texas, with the candidates for governor set to debate at 7 p.m. Gov. Rick Perry has chosen not to participate, which means it will be Democrat Bill White and two minor-party candidates. The debate could be a major opportunity for White to reach voters, but will anyone notice? This doesn’t appear to be something that many people will find unless they’re actively looking for it. More

Perry plays it safe, does little talking, while White takes aim at rival
Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
If the candidates for governor were chain stores, Rick Perry would probably be Safeway and Bill White would be Target. Many believe Perry's campaign is playing it safe. He has eschewed editorial boards and is refusing to debate. His campaign is limited to a few stops a day, mostly for positive, staged announcements or small gatherings of supporters. No fatigue-fueled mistakes. Bill White's campaign is about fixing a target on Perry while rolling down the aisles of state problems — dropouts, higher education costs, border security. More

Judge: AHF land was fairly valued
Amarillo Globe-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
In a battle between alleged creditors in the American Housing Foundation bankruptcy, disputed land values will stand. Rep. Ted Poe: Mexican law enforcement 'corrupt or incompetent,' unlikely to solve jet ski shooting
Houston Chronicle Texas on the Potomac Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Mexican and American governments have been intimidated into backing off the investigation into the Sept. 30 shooting of American jet skier David Hartley on Falcon Lake, Texas Rep. In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, the Humble Republican said the subsequent murder and beheading of the top Mexican investigator on the case by the Zeta drug cartel has effectively halted the probe. Opening arguments are schedule to begin Tuesday in the trial of a South Texas state lawmaker accused of perjury and ethics violations. Rep. Kino Flores, 52, will go on trial in Travis County state district court in Austin. A July 2009 indictment alleged that Flores, a Democrat from Palmview, failed to declare $115,000 to $185,000 in income each year from 2004 to 2009. Flores also was accused of not reporting property sales and gifts of air transportation. He has pleaded not guilty. More

Wording of city benefits ballot confuses as early voting begins
El Paso Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Eastsider Arnold Montiel thought he was voting for the city to continue benefits for domestic partners when he cast his ballot Monday. But Montiel, because of the wording of a proposition, actually voted against the city's current extension of benefits to unmarried couples, which includes but is not limited to same-sex partners. "It was confusing," Montiel said. "If you voted yes you were voting no, if you voted no you were voting yes. It wasn't clear." More
