DFW home sales score double-digit gain

Pre-owned home sales in North Texas were up 11 percent in October from a year ago – the first year-over-year gain since September 2008 and the best sign yet that the local housing market has turned the corner. Real estate agents sold more than 6,300 single-family homes through the Multiple Listing Service last month, according to numbers released by the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University and the North Texas Real Estate Information Systems. Three Lubbock building leaders were honored at the Texas Association of Builders annual convention in Grapevine Oct. 29-31. U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, was inducted into the Texas Housing Hall of Honor. Neugebauer has spent 30 years in Lubbock as a land developer, home builder, and banker. The trade association honored Rick McGuire as "Builder of the Year." Commercial builder David R. Miller was installed as the second vice president, putting him in line for the association's presidency in 2011-12. More

Nearly a year before Maj. Nidal Hasan allegedly went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, terrorism investigators conducted an "assessment" of him before deciding he did not pose a threat. After the shooting, the FBI is doing a new assessment - of its own conduct. The Army psychiatrist is believed to have acted alone despite repeated communications - intercepted by authorities - with a radical imam overseas, U.S. officials said. More

Dallas-Fort Worth has the second-most Energy Star-rated homes built in the U.S. since the Environmental Protection Agency began keeping track in 1995. The Metroplex is behind Houston, according to figures being released today as the EPA marks the milestone of 1 million Energy Star homes built. Other Texas markets in the top 20 are San Antonio (No. 8) and Austin-Round Rock (No. 14). California also has four metro areas in the top 20. More

She said publicly during summertime that she would step down in October or November to focus on her campaign to defeat Gov. Rick Perry for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
