We all know the old saying — "Everything is bigger in Texas." And right now, the real estate market in the Lone Star State is no exception. Just how big is this industry? According to the Texas Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University, real estate is the second largest industry in the state (behind manufacturing), and it accounts for 8.4 percent of the state's gross domestic product. In fact, Texas real estate wealth is valued at $1.6 trillion! That's $65,432 worth of real estate for each Texan! Of the state's real estate wealth, 56.3 percent is in single-family housing — which came out to a whopping $945.1 billion in 2011. More

OSHA provides expanded information on variance procedures

Builder confidence in the 55+ housing market for single-family homes showed significant improvement in the third quarter of 2012 compared to the same period a year ago, according to the National Association of Home Builders' latest 55+ Housing Market Index. The index more than tripled year over year from a level of 12 to 36, which is the highest third-quarter reading since the inception of the index in 2008. "Many builders and developers in the 55+ housing segment are reporting an increase in demand from consumers," said NAHB 50+ Housing Council Chairman W. Don Whyte. More

BP to pay record fine in Gulf of Mexico oil spill

Oil giant BP has agreed to pay the largest criminal penalty in U.S. history, totaling billions of dollars, for the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a person familiar with the deal said. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record about the deal, also said two BP PLC employees face manslaughter charges over the death of 11 people in the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that triggered the massive spill. New venture aims to invest millions in office buildings

Real estate investor Tom Stacy said that he and a partner have created a company to invest millions in purchasing office buildings in major Texas cities. Stacy and Steve LeBlanc, former senior managing director of private markets for the Teacher Retirement System, are founding partners of the new venture, CapRidge Partners LLC. CapRidge has secured its first equity commitment — $30 million — from a major public institutional investor that will allow the firm to buy $100 million in assets during the next two years, Stacy and LeBlanc told the American-Statesman. Two more apartment towers planned for downtown Austin

Two towers formerly planned as condominium projects are moving forward as apartment buildings that will add more than 500 luxury units to downtown Austin. Both projects are expected to break ground soon. One will be a 300-unit tower that will rise 19 stories — just under 200 feet — at 214 Barton Springs Road. The other project, formerly called 7RIO, is set to break ground in December at West Seventh and Rio Grande Streets. More
