Abbott posts Web ad on his transition

The governor's race may be over, but Greg Abbott isn't ready to kick a campaign habit: churning out glossy Web ads. Recently, the governor-elect’s transition team released a 30-second spot summing up what he's done since Election Day, most prominently his nomination of Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos to be secretary of state. The video also shows Abbott meeting with various other elected officials, agency heads and business leaders, including an economic development roundtable he hosted last week in the Rio Grande Valley.

With new pledges, Straus likely to remain speaker

A dozen more House Republicans publicly pledged their support to Speaker Joe Straus, bringing the total number of members expected to back him above the 76 votes he needs to be elected for a fourth term as speaker. State Rep. Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, released a statement Tuesday backing Straus, with 11 other Republican members' names on it.

US home sales rise in October
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Americans bought homes in October at the briskest pace this year, a sign that the sluggish housing market is turning around. Sales of existing homes rose 1.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.26 million last month, the National Association of Realtors said Thursday. That's up from a revised pace of 5.18 million in September. October marked the first month in 2014 when sales increased compared to a year ago, registering a 2.5 percent gain. Still, the Realtors project that 2014 sales will fall below 2013 levels.

Katy master-planned community to offer 2,000 new homes
Houston Chronicle
Cane Island, Katy's first master-planned community, designed for a 1,000 tree-lined site, will add 2,000 new homes to the area. The homes will be priced from the $200,000′s to more than $1 million. Developer Rise Communities said the community was named after the 1872 settlement that later became Katy. The new development will be four miles west of the Grand Parkway and off Interstate 10 at the Cane Island Parkway, which is expected to open around the same time. The community is slated to open in mid-2015.

Could decline in median new-home size herald return of entry-level buyers?

Newly built, single-family homes in the U.S. finally are getting smaller, a sign that a long-awaited shift of builders to slightly smaller, more affordable homes likely has started. Commerce Department data released shows the median size of a single-family home built in the third quarter was 2,414 square feet, down 2.3 percent from the second quarter measure of 2,472.
