Appeals court urged to move forward with voter ID case
San Antonio Express-News
Some plaintiffs challenging Texas' voter ID law want a federal appeals court to speed up its consideration of the case, looking to sort it out before the next wave of elections in the state. In a court document filed recently, the plaintiffs note that 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has not yet set a schedule to hear the case, casting uncertainty over how much time its outcome will give municipalities to prepare for their elections in May.

Texas' challenge to immigration order in the works
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
A state lawsuit challenging President Barack Obama's executive order shielding as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation could come from Texas in the next two weeks, Gov.-elect Greg Abbott said during a Monday news conference. "Most everyone agrees that the immigration system in America is broken," Abbott said. "Similarly, most agree that executive fiat is not the right way to fix it." Added Abbott: "The president must follow the law just like everyone else."

Texas education reforms are key in promoting the middle skills
Construction Citizen
Sweeping education reforms passed by the Texas Legislature in 2013 will be a great help to business leaders in Houston as they embark on an unprecedented push to promote "middle skills" jobs. Those are well-paying jobs that require more than a high school diploma but less than a degree from a four-year college or university. A huge piece of that education reform package, known as House Bill 5, was the creation of multiple pathways for students to earn their high school diploma. Among the options students and parents can now choose from is a career in the blue collar trades like construction.

Where Texas scores among big spenders
Houston Business Journal
While Texas isn't home of the biggest spenders, Texans still like to roll out the cash, according to a study by WalletHub. WalletHub ranked the state 22nd out of all 50 states and Washington, D.C., for the greatest amount of spending. A lot of that can be attributed to how much Texans are paying for energy, according to WalletHub spokeswoman Jill Gonzalez. "A lot of people in Texas are focusing on spending money on the necessities — gas and other energies — as well as housing and utilities," she said.
