Building on 2010
Constructech Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The construction industry has been hammered by an economic downturn that continues to rock even the strongest of foundations. However, construction firms both large and small are working to rebuild their companies by using technology to manage workflow and social media tools to rebuild businesses. The question now is whether you are using one of these social media sites. Are you embracing technology? Are you using social media to help you communicate your strengths beyond the four walls in which you operate? More

Hays Free Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Hays County Republican Party unanimously passed a resolution Monday night urging State Rep.-Elect Jason Isaac not to vote for Joe Straus in his bid to retain the position of Speaker of the House. "As far as Joe Straus goes, he is a more moderate Republican," said Hays County Party Chair Bud Wymore. "There is a place in the Republican Party for people like Joe Straus that are more moderate — it's just not in leadership positions." More

Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail

The woeful state budget can't rain on your parade if you don't have one. In the shadow of a potentially staggering $25 billion budget shortfall, Gov. Rick Perry — who has written a new book on the overspending of Washington — is toning down his third inauguration. The governor and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, both Republicans, will take their oaths of office at 11 a.m. Jan. 18 at the Capitol's south steps, but the festivities will be more subdued than those from past years. More

Millions for San Antonio on the line
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Republicans mounted stiff opposition Wednesday to a year-end $1.1 trillion spending bill in the Senate that contains millions in pork barrel projects, including earmarks for San Antonio and South Texas. South Texas military installations would see $46 million in construction projects, and San Antonio would benefit from $8 million in bus improvements, cybersecurity training and other programs in the 1,924-page spending bill. Nueces commissioners to revisit rules that govern Padre Island development
Corpus Christi Caller-Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nueces County beach construction rules are expected to be among the first issues county commissioners take up early next year. The county allows construction 350 feet landward from the dune vegetation line, one of the strictest setback rules on the Texas coast. Commissioners tabled a vote on an erosion response plan that includes the 350-foot rule after County Judge Loyd Neal raised questions about the plan's authority over Port Aransas, which permits construction at 200 feet from the vegetation line. Neal said he wants to vote on something that would apply to all of Nueces County and not certain areas. More

Panel looks at eliminating elected oil, gas overseers
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Conventional wisdom is that a more conservative Legislature is coming to Austin to cut spending and streamline government, including the possibility of layoffs. But would lawmakers really give pink slips to three statewide elected officials — all Republicans — who oversee the state's powerful energy industry? The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission, a panel of lawmakers who review state agencies to make them more effective, began mulling that option without tipping their hand at a public hearing. More

Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

BP isn't alone, according to leaders of the Chemical Safety Board, who complained that the entire oil industry has ignored key lessons from past accidents and isn't doing enough to prevent them.
