Silver has been used as biocide for medical purposes since the 1930s. Today nanometric size silver particles are used to prevent unpleasant odour caused by bacteria in sport shirts or socks. "Nanosilver can be applied in lower quantities than other antimicrobials and hence has advantages regarding resource use and environmental loads," Tobias Walser tells youris.com.

Belarus makes knitting yarns from bioflax

Researchers in Minsk, Belarus say they have developed a unique technology which enables them to make knitting yarn from the bast fiber flax. The technology is said to allow the manufacture of flax based yarns which are nearly half the thickness of yarns currently being used by knitwear manufacturers in Belarus and other CIS states. The technology is patented in these territories.

Rollprint investing $1.25 million in new pouch line

Lenzing Group new sustainability report

The Lenzing Group has published a new report on its activities pertaining to the issue of sustainability entitled "Focus Sustainability - Taking Responsibility for Our Business." The report focuses on fibers, the core segment of the Lenzing Group, which accounts for 90 percent of consolidated sales. For the first time, the contents of the report are geared to the standards contained in the Global Reporting Initiative. In Lenzing's view it fulfills the requirements of Application Level B in accordance with GRI requirements. The new report is based on figures and information from the 2011 financial year and in part from 2012.
