China: Does rise in manufacturing indicate rebound?

Chinese manufacturing rose to a seven-month high in October, suggesting continued momentum for the rebound in the world's second-biggest economy. The report follows Chinese data earlier this month that showed quarterly economic growth rose to 7.8 percent after hitting a two-decade low in the second quarter, easing pressure for further stimulus and allowing leaders to focus on reforms.

Filtration Group to acquire Porex

The Chicago-headquartered Filtration Group plans to acquire Porex Corporation, based in Fairburn, Ga., from the Los Angeles investment firm Aurora Capital. Founded in 1961, Porex is a global leader in the development and manufacturing of porous polymer products — including plastics, nonwovens and glass-based media.

TAPPI NET division to host series of free webinars
The TAPPI NET division announces the first webinar in their series on Nonwovens Processes, to be held at noon EST on Dec. 12. Nonwoven materials are produced by a wide variety of processes ranging from hydraulic formation, air assisted processing, direct polymer to web systems and combinations of these. These materials find applications in diverse fields including filtration, automotive, hygiene products, battery separators, medical and home furnishings. This webinar will highlight some of the most common processes including wet-laid, melt blown and electrospinning. Presenters Christina Ruiz and Sneha Swaminathan of Hollingsworth & Vose will present an overview of some of the various processes used to produce nonwovens material, the standard equipment utilized and descriptions of media produced by each process. Today, the new facility has opened the doors to a technical center that hosts an industrial scale needlepunch pilot line and a new grinding shop.

How diapers cost more, but prices stayed the same

As go Pampers prices, so too go Huggies'. And the direction is higher. Kimberly-Clark Corp. said it will raise the price for most Huggies diapers sold in North America by 7 percent. It's doing so by reducing the number of diapers in each pack, mirroring a change that Procter & Gamble Co. made in its leading Pampers brand and on its Luvs brand in mid-September.

US Navy to provide flame resistant overalls for sailors
U.S. Fleet Forces and Pacific Fleet released a joint message, detailing the use and wear of the new Flame Resistant Variant coveralls, which will begin being distributed to sailors in the fleet before the end of the year. Scheduled to start arriving in December, the new coveralls will initially be provided to the crews of ships scheduled to deploy in early 2014.

Suominen reports positive development for 2013
Innovation in Textiles
Suominen Corporation, the supplier of nonwovens and flexible packaging for use in consumer goods, has reported a decline in net sales from the continuing operations by 2 percent over the third quarter 2013. Operating profit excluding non-recurring items from continuing operations also decreased by 15 percent.
